More likely the parents would hand over the money to get some peace and quiet, thats what happened with my friends.

Ah that could be the factor that keeps them from crying. Maybe the other kids that get lots of presents will then ask their parents for money to go out or w/e and they'll say "sorry, we spent all our money on the christmas presents" where as your family always as that little bit extra and maybe the kids have realised that.
My nieces and nephews all get gift vouchers for Xmas from me so that can go towards a more expensive gift.
