More likely the parents would hand over the money to get some peace and quiet, thats what happened with my friends.

Ah that could be the factor that keeps them from crying. Maybe the other kids that get lots of presents will then ask their parents for money to go out or w/e and they'll say "sorry, we spent all our money on the christmas presents" where as your family always as that little bit extra and maybe the kids have realised that.

With regard to the pressie thing. I don't know that it will get much worse. The next generation of parents know not to be sucked in by all the commercialisation. I remember we always got one main present and lots of stocking fillers. Maybe this is the way it will go again.

My nieces and nephews all get gift vouchers for Xmas from me so that can go towards a more expensive gift.

Thing is if you set a discipline from the beginning with them with stuff like presents they know where they stand and so, with my nephews and nieces anyway, seem less likely to do the whole comparison thing. I think they benefit where other kids dont in that a little extra money can be spent on days out because a fortune hasnt been spent on presents for everyone and it doesnt take months to pay back debts so theres really an all year round benefit.
