Just got this news via email from IGN Subscription! The email said:

"Finally the news has arrived, Nintendo has officially sold its share of Rare to Microsoft for just short of $400 million. Last year, Nintendo had the opportunity to purchase the company, and refused. Rare put up the for sale sign and was looked at by both Microsoft and Activision. Microsoft won the bidding war, and Nintendo has cut its ties with Rare."

"Star Fox Adventures is still due out on September 23rd, but GBA titles like Sabre Wulf, Diddy Kong Pilot, Donkey Kong: Coconut Crackers, and Banjo Kazooie are still an unknown. We are assuming that at least 1 or 2 of these are already finished, and should be released by the end of the year, if not early next year."

"This announcement will be made official at Microsoft’s X02 Europe event in Seville, Spain on September 24th. Ironically, it's the day after Nintendo ships Rare’s one and only GameCube title yet no one picked up on anything."

"Although Nintendo doesn't comment on rumors or speculation by the media, we can tell you that Nintendo spoke to us and said that they have made the decision not to request Rare to make any further exclusive games for the Nintendo GameCube. Although we're proud of our joint efforts with Rare over the years and have enjoyed our relationship with them, in fiscal year 2001, Rare accounted for only 9.5% of total Nintendo software revenue worldwide. In fiscal year 2002, that number declined to 1.5%. Therefore, in evaluating our investments in developers, as well as the financial benefits to Nintendo over the years, we've decided it's in Nintendo's best interests to focus on diversifying our portfolio of developers and projects elsewhere away from Rare."

The email also spoke that Perfect Dark ZERO will be an XBOX exclusive and as previously discussed the main character will change but the game Rare have been working on for the GameCube will be enhanced using extra Xbox features but the level designs will be kept as planned.

Oh well just another few games to add to the list of 32 :) at least they won't be out this year which will give me chance to rob a few banks etc!

Is this the end of Nintendo as we know it? Will the rumours about this being Nintendo's last console be coming apperent sooner than we expected? All will be revealed soon!!

Its good that Rare are an XBox company, but with me owning a GC I wasnt too bothered. Rare are a good company that produce great games, but they dont really produce loads. If you look at the revenues that they brought in for Nintendo over the last 2 years, then really there not really a company to shout about. Yes they do produce good games, but when will we actually see PD0 or any other Rare game? GC will still have Star Fox and quite a few of the characters that have been associated with Rare are owned by Nintendo for example, Fox McCloud and Donkey Kong.

I am not putting down Rare as I do aggree that they are a top developer that nearly always produce the best games, but with those percentage of revenues they made for Nintendo, then they wont be missed by Nintendo.

So your mates went out this afternoon all 7 of them and sold their consoles and also had the time to buy Xbox's or Xbox games, because of one e-mail that may have cancelled the possibility of Rare bringing out a single game for the gamecube every year at the most?

Why do I smell BS?

Anyway if this is official then great it's all over and done with and what I thought may happen has happened. Though from where I can see it's saying Rare aren't gonna make games exclusivly for Nintendo's consoles it doesn't mention Nintendo selling their shares, I swear we've been reading this message all day.

If they have sold then I'm off down to Twycross to pull Moony's.

Well if you hadn't made a response to my initial post, you wouldn't have had to bother, would you?

My comment was about Rare's games and nothing at all to do with the Xbox, and STILL you jump in defending it when there was no need to.

Is the Xbox some kind of security blanket to you, or are you just paranoid?

Is that what you say when you get beaten in an argument? Not that I'm looking for one with you (or anyone else) ^_^

And I'd imagine Rare will make all new games, seeing asmost of their past games were Nintendo franchises. Conkers is likely, but I think they're more inclined to go with something new.

I bet you wouldn't have said that BEFORE the deal! :-P

Anyway, you lot should be very happy that Rare are making Xbox games.
Besides Sega, they are the only company likely to give the xbox a much needed touch of originaility and imagination.

About PD0, what you heard about the character change will only come if Nintendo win leagal rights to the franchise (it was registered in Nintendo's name even though Rare made it) in which case the game won't even be "Perfect Dark".

Nothing to worry about though.

Rare lost the Jame Bond liscence and Perfect Dark was great without it.
After, all it's the game, not the franchise that counts and I'm sure Rare will make the best no matter who they devellop for.

It's not really a blow to Nintendo though.
If Nintendo needed Rare, they had the oportunity to buy them.
Instead they chose to sell.

They don't really need Rare now they have lots of support from third parties, besides, Rare's extremely high price tag, and the fact that they don't make many games meant that it wasn't exactly profitable to keep them.

And Nintendo are good games designers themselves.
MS NEED Rare in this department...

As for Nintendo losing fans, judging by these forums, it's Rare that has been turned upon. Still, for every Ninty that turns on Rare, there's an X-Rare-hating MS fan who'll love them!

I'm not to fussed, because although I want the new Rare games, MS are cutting the Xbox price so rapidly, by the time Rare release something, I'll probably be able to pick MS's big box up for a fiver! ;-D

If you're trying to imply that the Xbox is a good console but I don't know it, then you're wrong. If I've told you once I've told you a million times, I don't have a problem with the Xbox - just the delays in the software releases. Which is why I am reluctant to sell it, rather than just writing it off because company X isn't making games for it.

So I was right, he didn't try it before he bought it? Did he get it because all his friends were getting one?

And so did Goatboy. The difference is that neither bought one because all their friends had one, and they didn't sell them because Rare weren't making games for it!

I don't moan about the Xbox - I LIKE the Xbox (controller excepted). I moan about the lack of software since launch. And I won't be selling it because one company isn't making games for it. With any luck, I won't be selling it at all. I'd rather have it there now collecting dust, than have to buy another one when I realise I made a mistake and that there are some good games available for it after all!

Wakey wakey! I mean 'the crowd' as in their immediate circle of friends, not the general gaming population!

According to you and your friends, it would seem that every non-Xbox title is just 'very average', while everything on Xbox is outstanding. You never have anything good to say about any title that isn't appearing on Xbox. You are the worst kind of fanboy - so blinkered that you can't even see it.

Nope they just know a good console when they see one!

3 of them own Xbox's
2 GameCube
2 PS2

One has only had a GameCube 3 weeks but doesn't like it at all, he was one that sold his today, Sav did the same thing.

I ask you the same question as well when you moan about the Xbox but they would rather get on and get rid of it instead of letting it collect dust.

Along with the crowd? That would be anti Xbox then because bar 2 of us the rest hated the Xbox in a big way until they had played one.

But one of them had a GameCube and Xbox and wanted Buffy and Conflict Desert Storm more than a couple of very average games for his Cube, he decided to trade his Cube with games for 3 Xbox games. One of my mates got Resident Evil for the Cube on Friday so we are going to go around to his house and complete it, thats the only game I want to play on the Cube so it suits me. This is no joke when I say this, but he is taking Resi Evil back to GAME using their 10 day back money guarentee program and he is getting a full refund! At the same time he is trading his GameCube with Rouge Leader for an Xbox, LOL, I don't know what you are going to say to this but its the truth. Its quite funny to be honest.

Do nintendo fans know that other companies apart from RARE do actually make Gamecube games.

*listens to the gasps from the nintendo fans*

Yes thats right. RARE may be good but they arent the best, imo. Its no big loss for the Gamecube nor is it a big gain for the X-Box.

I cant believe anybody would sell a console because one company stopped producing games for it.

Besides that, youll need a Gamecube for when the sonic compilation comes out. =D

I probably shouldn't say it, but I have to...

Your friends all seem to me to either be none too bright, or sheep - or none too bright sheep.

From your various posts, we can deduce that your friends have all bought PS2s and Gamecubes, then sold them because they didn't like them.

Did it not occur to any of them to see the things in action before buying them, rather than all rushing out and wasting money at the same time? Would have saved them all a lot of hassle.

Seems to me they're all too eager to get hold of new technology without knowing much about it, then feel bitter when they discover they don't like it. 'Around 7 of them' all thinking the same about about two consoles and all loving the Xbox? That's a single-mindedness not seen since... well, the Borg! I'd question whether they all really do feel the same way, or if they're just going along to be part of the crowd.

Sure, I'm not happy with Xbox at the moment, but at least I'm willing to hold onto mine and see what happens.
