I'll try and speak everyone's mind here... this has really gone crappy. Notables are symbols of power instead of just a little gold star saying "you're a damn fine writer/thinker/whatever".
People have suggested stopping the elections, voting out notables, and loads of stuff. I have a suggestion myself, which is why I want ALL notables in here.
I suggest every notable, all of us, gives up their status and goes back to being a regular. Clean the slate, truly.
Then? Who cares. They can have new elections if they want for people to have power symbols of their forums, or abolish it altogether. The good writers know who they are.
And what would happen then? We'd all be equal. We can talk about monkeys and games and whatever all the time, instead of having stupid bloody copularity pontests etc.
So, it's simple. NOTABLES ONLY. If you want this to work, just say your opinion on this, and state please if you want your status taken away from you.
This won't really work unless we all agree to it, so it's down to you. If you really need a gold name to prove to people that you're a good writer, then fine, keep your colour. Otherwise, if you'd rather stand out by your own personality, and you'd rather stand out by allowing people to judge you themselves, not just a group of people that think you're cool, or a group of people who assume you're cool because you have a gold name... then... please make yourself known.
As for me, I'm kinda fed up of being held high and mighty by the decisions of five people... because that's all it comes down to in the end. I will happily become a regular again.
and then one person a year (chosen by the STAFF) will have their name turned into a nice shade of black???
It's a shame, because it was a great idea, let down by the fact that people are greedy, corrupt, and can get so damn messed up over changing the colour of a name on a website that means absolutely nothing at all.
I just really want to see this forum back with the equal status we used to have.
To me, being made a notable always reminds me of the 'thank you' we got from SR for contributing to the site, it means nothing more, nothing less. It doesn't matter how many votes someone got, or who voted for them, the simple fact remains that if SR choose this way to say 'thank you' to people for making the forums what they are, it seems a bit ungrateful to turn around and kick them in the teeth by saying that having a 'yellow' coloured name is now devalued or not worth it.
Having said that, I remember thinking at the time of the first ever notable elections that just the words 'thank you' from Tony were enough, I didn't need a yellow name to remind me, but then others don't think the way I do, hence why we 'discuss' things.
There's only 15 notables at present, there are 100s of other people that have contributed hugely to the success of these forums over the last two years, and I feel it would be unfair to deny them the chance to have their name listed as a notable by scrapping the current system.
And look at the alternatives. Most other sites let you get to 2000 posts and you can have an avatar under your name. Imagine the spamming that would ensue just for a picture. Other sites give you stars and the words 'advanced member' or 'senior member' depending on your post count, but any 13 year old with spare time can post like crazy to get there.
So the notable system is unique, in the same way that GADs are, and neither involve the generation of copious amounts of spam to achieve. So what I'm saying, basically, is keep it the way it is.
