The other day I was discussing with someone on here (Think it was Shocky but just in case it wasn’t I’ll leave it as “someone”) about getting an X-box. He replied; “I can’t believe it, Dringo the mighty Nintendo fan talking about getting an X-box”, with the questioned loyalty I shook such a thought out of my head and decided to move on to Doshin the Giant. But this isn’t the first (and it won’t be the last) time I was swayed by the X-box, in fact a total of 3 times had me try and claw a way of getting Microsoft’s black kit, and now with SR selling The X-box with Halo for a measly £209.99 I was VERY tempted (can you do a similar deal around Christmas do you think?). Why shouldn’t I get an X-box? True my obsession and seemingly unshakable loyalty to the longest running console manufacturer in the industry will be tarnished (yep that’s right I’m proud of it) but are really X-box the bad guys? I mean is the X-box really a result of money hungry Microsoft employees trying to destroy another industry, well no the fact is the X-box is being outsold by Nintendo, they are making a loss with every console sold and they say they won’t make a profit on it by 2006 but by then wouldn’t a successor the X-box be out? Have Microsoft for the first time really made a mess of things or are they here for a different reason? Yep you can tell I’m thinking of a different reason, that reason is to destroy Sony’s Playstation franchise.

Consoles are for Children through to Teenagers, any older and you’re not really interested, it is sad but most of you reading this now will probably give up gaming all together come 20 odd. Of course many adults do play games but the violent games are aimed at Teenagers so they can look at them and go “cool” and the rest are made for Children or sport nuts. The Gamecube isn’t a children’s console, but it does stick itself in the age bracket of 3-20 year olds, the ages where most gamers can be found, so why is it Sony and Microsoft aim at the 16-26 year old age bracket and still sell loads? It’s all to do with hardware, the PS1 was a games console, but the ability to play music CD’s as well probably swayed a good few older music fans of returning to gaming, mixed with more “mature” or “realistic” games it was a dawn of a new era, yet the dawn of the next era was very close indeed, it was with the death of SEGA’s console reign. After the Dreamcast failed to the seemingly unstoppable killing machine that was the PS2, Sony realized they could dabble in further areas of the industry. Nintendo were a mere piece of gum on the PS2’s shoe at the time and with no apparent opposition, Sony began to make the PS2 appeal to the older gamers, the 30 plus people by not changing anything regarding gaming. So imagine you’re a parent, your kids want a games console, and you see one in the shop that happens to have an in-built DVD player, why now the children can play the games and you can watch those awesome DVD movies.

People claimed the PS2 was falling into a trap of becoming a dumbed down PC, wrong it wasn’t falling into a trap this was deliberate. Nintendo always used to claim themselves as a family computer, this is utter rubbish as few 30-year olds play games (regularly) and so yes Nintendo have made a family “friendly” image but hardly an all round system for the family. The PS2 had meanwhile, the parents can watch the DVD films and the Children can play the games yes but then add a operating system in the form of Linux, a Hard drive, Internet access, a few further PC accessories like a mouse and you have your own portable PC for such a small price in comparison to an actual PC. A family unit all round was made and so many new opportunities arise in social segments, in business areas and of course Entertainment. Nintendo have no interest in developing down these aisles, Internet would only be developed by Nintendo for the use of games not for anything more, after all Nintendo push the fact across “THIS IS A GAMES CONSOLE”. Now naturally the fact the PS2 is descending in such varied sections of the industry will annoy at least a few different companies, I’m putting money on Phillips and other DVD player manufacturers not being too pleased with the PS2. Yet what can Phillip’s do about it? To bring down the PS2 they would need to enter as many markets as Sony including the game one which they have visited before and failed miserably. Panasonic are making small pot shots at Sony by signing with Nintendo, changing Nintendo’s console into one resembling Sony’s. Nevertheless no company would be as worried as Microsoft, a portable PC? Sony was the biggest threat to Microsoft since… well EVER, and the only way Microsoft could deal with it was to bring down the Playstation.

An opportunity arises where Microsoft can enter a new market, getting a foot into one of the fastest expanding industries around as well as putting a stop to this 30 million + selling threat. And so here we are today, and have Microsoft failed in their attempt to crush Sony? No they haven’t they may have only sold 3.8 million consoles worldwide so far (Gamecube has sold 4.8) but when a parent decides on a console and is tempted by the family computer idea who will they turn to now? A computer that boasts better specs, a DVD player built in, a hard drive built in, Internet from the box, Direct X tools… why it offers MORE than the PS2 and straight from the box for the SAME price. You are witnessing the downfall of the biggest selling games console, SEGA were here once remember. So what of Nintendo? Well the X-box has made the next fight much closer, next time the name “Playstation” isn’t going to sell Sony’s third beast and Microsoft are making it harder and harder for Sony by wearing away at them, and soon enough like many before, Sony may not survive, after all PS2 sales have dropped dramatically since the release of the X-box (not Gamecube) mainly because they are competing for the same turf.

And how does this help Nintendo? Well with Microsoft keeping Sony busy with the battle of the PC, Nintendo are increasing it’s sales (the pressure has been properly lifted after the N64 struggle), increasing it’s third party support, increasing its exclusive titles, increasing its adult demographic and most of all increasing it’s dwindled levels of respect. After Microsoft finally has Sony beat (be it out of pure resilience money wise or not), Nintendo will be sitting there ruling the section of the market, which is just about the gaming. Consumers will have the choice, go for Nintendo’s cheap games console or Microsoft’s expensive multi-system console, and no amount of advertisement will really have much effect, if its just a games console you’re after then Nintendo is the way to go but if you are after something for all the family then go get that Z-box. At the moment Sony have gone on to fight the war with Microsoft and SEGA have said their final farewells, Nintendo are now controlling a segment of the market no one is threatening.

So now can I buy an X-box?

Dringo.

Try the Gamecube has sold twice as many as Xbox.

Sigh. I don't consider the xbox a bad console. I don't like the gamecube as the games on the console don't appeal to me. But why does these arguements ALWAYS have to turn out into arguements about sales.

No-one in this forum has put down the gamecube in anyway so here it goes
*prepares sheild*

The gamecube in my opinion is'nt the best console in the world as many of the games don't seem to appeal to me, Games like Mario Sunshine appear to be kiddie like and if they think advertising the game in a japanese porn mag is going to attract kids to the game they are wrong.

Sure games like Resident Evil, yeah what a great looking game but i would'nt buy the gamecube for one single game, that'd be just pointless.

Like people say, every console has its down points and the gamecube has them too by not having a hard drive or internet gaming which improves many games on the xbox in many ways.

Like i say most games on the GC are'nt that exciting to wet my pants over...

er-no you cannot just not encourage people not to buy a console, thats virtually black mail. I never really listen to other peoples comments about my preffered console especially the ones such as

"The xbox is the worst ever console as its big"
"The xbox is crap because the sales in europe areslightly below the gamecube"
"The xbox is crap because nintendo is better"

All industrys are money hungry - even Nintendo - they don't care about customers they just want cash in their pocket aswell as Microsoft and Sony..

I like my xbox as its excellent games and many more to come.

Garbe, stop making an argument out of everything. When people mindlessly insult the Xbox, maybe you have a right to get angry, but none of that has gone on here, Strafex, er-no, etc. never actually criticised the Xbox without explaining the criticisms, and they weren't 'trivial' things like size etc.

You are now just making yourself look like you're out to start an argument. I'll say again, stop expecting everyone to be as pro Xbox as you, everyone has their own opinion on it, and you seem to be telling everyone their own opinion is wrong just because they're not praising the Xbox like it's gods gift.

Every console has it's problems, just because someone points out some problems the Xbox has, doesn't mean they're saying the Xbox is crap.

All the consoles do. The XBox probably has most though. With Microsoft struggling with all the campaigns and the regulatory boards standing tall at every corner.

Only time will tell.

If you read what I said then you wouldn't be trying to stand so high and mighty on that throne of yours. Max Payne was originally coded for the PC. Then it was ported to the PS2 and then the XBox. I said if the original game was coded a specific console it would most probably run best on that console (if the other versions were ports).

Also, most of the games you mentioned. With the exception of THPS3 are in my opinion complete crap. Especially Spiderman.

I don't want to not get on with anyone here, the fact is that I have all the three consoles and give them all equal chances as you can recognise from my explanatory posts. I don't dislike you. Infact I would love you to come into shop oneday and talk through all this with me. I would show you a few things from my bulletins you really didn't know.

However, I imagine most of your XBox fans will for the next 15 months go on and on about the screenshots and whatnots of Halo II. You probably won't. I hate people who do that. Be warned.

I agree fully with Garbe.
There are many examples her which all of you should take heed to.

I think he has been very reasonable here, when reading other peoples comments towards him, he has all rights to put you back in your place. He has got enough evidence here that no one could really argue with.

Firstly I would like to correct er-no, Max Payne on the PS2 is riddled with a very poor frame rate problem and the camera is much further out from Max than it is on the PC and Xbox versions. You said Agent under Fire had better load times, what are you talking about? Don't you know what the Xbox Hard Drive is used for? The Hard Drive acts as a temporary buffer so that games can load a file onto it which automatically deletes after you finish playing the game. Every review I have read so far on Multi-Format games has said that the Xbox does have the best version, let me just point a few of these out. Please don't get me wrong, the game is still good on the GameCube and PS2 but the little extras make the Xbox versions better (like customisable sound tracks, better frame rate etc) but don't miss-understand what I am saying. These snippets were taken from IGN (pay particular attention to THPS3 that proves my point):

Spider-Man: Xbox/GameCube/PS2

April 18, 2002 - We know how much IGN readers love those spoilers and in Spider-Man for the Xbox you've got the greatest interactive super hero movie spoiler of all time. The Columbia Pictures film starring Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe opens up on May 3, but you can get all of the big budget Hollywood action you need from Treyarch's technically impressive Xbox game. Spidey is coming to every platform out there, with the exception of Dreamcast, so you may want to check out our exclusive head to head breakdown of the three console versions to help you decide. But there should be no doubt in your mind that the Xbox version of Spider-Man is the clear winner.

Burnout: Xbox/GameCube/PS2

April 30, 2002 - The ports just keep on comin' to Xbox. Acclaim continues the tradition with the release of Burnout, a visually improved and control-tweaked port of the PlayStation 2 version that released November 2001. It's an arcade racer through and through, and is a markedly different experience for Xbox' still growing next-generation system.

Crash Bandicoot: Xbox/PS2

April 26, 2002 - Crash Bandicoot was once the mighty PlayStation mascot, charged with the task of selling consoles to the masses. Crash was Sony's answer to Mario. A few years and a few games have passed and Crash has been cut free from its Sony ties. Now able to pop up on any console, Vivendi Universal has ported Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex to Xbox. It's been half a year since The Wrath of Cortex was released on PS2; those six months bought a graphical upgrade for the game and a few extras.

Agent under Fire: Xbox/PS2/GameCube

April 05, 2002 - Electronic Arts ported the James Bond 007 in... Agent under Fire over from the PlayStation 2, bringing improved visuals and multiplayer bots to the Xbox. The varied single player game modes, the improved multiplayer game and the Bond license it self just don't do enough to correct what's wrong with Agent under Fire.

THPS3: Xbox/GameCube/PS2

March 06, 2002 - The first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater opened the gaming public's eyes to the possibilities of an extreme sports game. Others have tried but none have been able to match the success of T Hawk. Each subsequent version of the game has only gotten better. Now, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 ollies its way onto Xbox. While essentially the same as the PS2 and GameCube versions, it does feature slightly better graphics, less slow down, and a few extra goodies to reward patient Xbox owners.

Now do you see what I mean? Don't say "but that is only IGN" because I have read it on GameSpy, GameSpot and independent magazines (Edge I think)! I know the Agent under Fire comment doesn't actually include the GameCube version, but in Edge they even commented on the extra technical issues that the Xbox version had assessed and improved that the GameCube version didn't. Do you see the point that I was trying to make? The facts are there but you seem to ignore them! The Xbox is the only console that has sold 3 launch titles that have sold 1 million copies, Dead or Alive 3, Project Gotham Racing and Halo. I know this might not help to prove anything but it certainly shows that the console is great across the board, superb racer, great fighter and awesome FPS!

Phi11ip don't flatter yourself that I want to reply to your comments, do you think it is good to try and work people up and get them annoyed? As soon as anyone says anything bad about the GameCube there are about 100 to fight there argument, but because everyone who owns an Xbox is sick and tired of fighting comments like the ones you have left in the Xbox forum, I asked people to let the "Xbox Stinks" post to sink, but know this so called respectable poster 'Starfex' thought it would be good to pop it back to the very top after a newbie had done earlier. I think the comment was 'This is for Garbe123', how pathetic is that?

Don't patronise me, I know what those faces mean, I don't need telling whether or not it is a joke or whether you are being serious or not, but if you think it is funny to try and work people up then you won't get very far in life without people turning round and doing something back to you :) I don't quite know what there is to understand about this:

>garbe123, you're relatively new to this forum (you've been around 99 >days, but that's mostly been the Xbox forum. You're new to FoG so you >won't quite "get it", a lot of us do) so I'll take you comments lightly >and let you off your "mis understanding".

Let me off from what? Just because you have been around a bit longer than I have does that mean you can let people of? Wow, I can't wait to be around 10000000 days because then I can order everyone around. I didn't think it worked like this, most people seem OK to talk to, most if not all of the Xbox forum are great to talk to, but then there is always a post coming from the direction of the Nintendo forum "Xbox is rubbish because it is big" and then there are those that will back him up, do you see a point in this?

I respect your opinions (believe it or not I do), I don't like the GameCube but I don't rant or rave about it, I keep it to myself most of the time (until I get mad like now). I can understand not liking a game, but spreading it across every forum doesn't make you like/dislike the game with anymore conviction does it? It amazes me that the comments you call 'Light Hearted' are not aimed at something you like a lot, it is always the Xbox. Most of the time the insults don't make sense, they range from:

Xbox is big therefore its rubbish!
Microsoft is rubbish so therefore the Xbox is!
The Xbox pad is big so its rubbish!
The Games are rubbish!
Xbox Stinks!
Xbox Sucks!

That’s what is posted day in and day out in the Xbox forum so don't tell me to 'chill out', if you had to put up with rubbish like this everyday then I think you would be the same! Or let me guess you would react differently and ignore it? Am I right? Well that is what you will probably say in a reply to this post, but if it came to reality you would feel exactly the same way I do!

Stop telling me to chill-out, don't patronise me with coping methods and stop trying to work people up, what is the point? Please take off the rose tinted GameCube glasses and perhaps try to play an Xbox, er-no may not like his Xbox but to say the only good game is HALO, is like me saying the only OK GameCube game is Rouge Leader! You keep saying you are only joking, well I will tell you now if you haven't gathered, I don't find it funny and those smiley faces are just used to give you the excuse that you were "only joking", and some jokes are best kept to yourself, especially when you know that others will be offended with what you put.

Please don't reply with yet another "Garbe chill out" post becuase I am bored of reading that, I think after all that The Xbox forum puts up with it should be a post from me saying "Stop desytroying an awesome console"! I have added one of my own symbols to the list:

:-) Smiley Face - Shows that the post is light hearted and in good humour.
;-) Winking face - likewise - emphasis on there being a joke
:-D Laughing face - a bit like the other too
:-P Sticking the tongue out - for cheeky little comments
Garbe 123 - A loyal and hard-core gamer that doesn't like people constantly putting the Xbox down and people telling him to calm down just because it doesn't effect them in anyway, also doesn't like a lot of people ganging up on him when they weren't involved in the first place.

If anyone has actually bothered to read all that they will realise that I do like to get my point across but I also like to get on with people (you will probably find it hard to believe). Whether I am new to FOG or not, that shouldn't stop me from challenging people who I think are in the wrong, sometimes I will let things go (as I do with newbie’s who hate the Xbox) but I sometimes like to get things of my chest, this is one of those times. I hope you understand where I am coming from and if not then there is nothing else I can do, try to think about how others feel before you post! Garbe123!
