1. There are not enough people coming to this site. Why not? Last month we had about 450,000 visitors to the SR sites. Why don't more of them stop to chat?
2. There is no red number in brackets (lately white number in brackets). This is a very sad situation. Unfortunately it was muscled off the top bar to make way for "walkthroughs". We surely need to find a little space for it somewhere.

I've told lots of my friends about the site and they've been on, I don't know if they have registered in the chat yet but i'll find out.
The reason why some of them don't stop to chat is because thier first task is to try and win a GAD, and so they enter hints/cheats/walkthroughs, reviews or a topic. Most don't know how they win here and I can't believe how many people don't read the rules. The next day they see if they have won and see that they haven't and probably just leave because they think it's a hoax or that you just award the favourites the games.
Also, they may come on, see that you have to become a member before you can win a game and just leave straight away..... even though its only about £8.
Maybe if you did open a comp for 'genuine' newbies to the site then maybe more people would come, and make it something that *they* could do and have a good chance of winning.
Like someone said, "Refer-a-friend" maybe? But only open to certain people maybe? Like newbies and JAT's?...... I dunno, its your site.....
But, as we see from one newbie to the site (every few days is it now?)
, we get lots of spam. Just think how much more spam there would be if 100 new people to the site would be!
Twould be hard to keep up with whats happening.
Well, whatever you do is your decision...... but it better be a good one!
I've told my friends and even got some of my school PC's homepages as specialreserve.net so that I can get to it quicker and more people can see it if they go on.

I think it's because newbies are all generally treated with pretty much 0 respect. If they start a topic, like Console Wars, a majority of users pile in and have a go at them. Does it say anywhere that console war topics are banned ? No, so leave them alone ! Generally, if anyone posts a topic that the most frequent users don't like, their replies to it knock any genuinely interesting topics way down the bottom of the list which is rather counterproductive.
Newbieaday would be pointless, as others have said, people would be registering every user name going and it's unlikely they'll stay if they only came because of a prize...
Special Reserve ought to have a couple of people on here during the day, say 9am-12am (shifts obviously lol :) )to start topics and try and moderate things a bit...OR why not have a real time chat section, like on Yahoo for general chat....this might free up FOG Chat from so muhc junk, and, whilst it wouldn't encourage massive discussions, would be better for people who wantto ask help, tips e.t.c.

Heh. Reasons why people don't "stop and chat" are pretty simple, and if you've read "Futurize your enterprise" by David Siegel, you'll know them all.
Basically, the vast majority of hits you get are from people quickly sifting through search engines looking for a specific product or two. They will come, look quickly, take maybe 3 minutes on your site and either buy something or move on to the next site.
These are a completely different breed of customer to the type that just sit around chatting because they have nothing better to do.
Of course, more obvious links to the chat forums will always improve chat traffic. Do you have a banner for the chat forums? I assume you run stats from your server logs to tell you which links on your site are never used, so you should be able to replace one of these with the chat forum link.

Next 5 people to sign up, automatically get a Regular status. Then you could tell the first 5 people that Natbuc, Afro Joe, Mandatare, cookiemonster and Mr. Nice Guy got there first :D
You could keep telling people this until you got a respectable amount users :D
You would get more chatters and they wouldn't know they were getting conned. What they wont know wont harm them :D
