The graphics on the PS1 where terrible, ugly blocky pop up.

Some some N64 cartriges would have had problems, but this only would have been if they were very badly mis-used (and I mean really badly).
It was either that or the Cart Port had become too dusty to operate, but CD lens's are far more susceptable to this.
Carts are No-where near as bad as cds, which are scratched by even putting them on an innapropriate surface.
They do feel a bit like bricks, I agree, especially Zelda: Majoras Mask, but as Boris the Blade says:
'If it doesn't work you can always hit him with it..'

Oh, as a side note, there used to be a PC that was sold in the Argos catalogue that had a built in Megadrive and a cartridge slot next to the CDROM drive, so you could have.
What I would give to get my hands on one of those now......

Basically, Nintendo offered an upgrade part way through the consoles life to help keep it up to the standards of the PC. They also utilised technology which was expensive at launch (and would have put the price of the console up) and which would have delayed the N64's launch.
