This information looks official, and is reputed to have come from SCEE themselves. Please anyone out there, PROVE THIS STORY WRONG. I am hoping beyond all hope that this is just a rumour.
It's probably because there are some out of the way Game stores and Dixon's etc that get an allocation of forms, just like the ones in London, but because they are in small, out of the way, back-end towns of the UK they don't get a great deal of people wanting PS2's, like a big city store would.
This news just in courtesy of Daily Radar:
"Panic over. After yesterday's announcement that the UK was to receive less PS2s than anticipated (165,000 rather than 200,000) Sony have confirmed to Daily Radar UK that this will not affect any existing pre-orders.
As reported yesterday unused pre-order forms are being recalled to ensure that there aren't more forms than PS2s - thus avoiding potential disapointment. Sony have confirmed that 200,000 forms were distributed but - luckily - less than 165,000 PS2s have been pre-ordered. It's now just a matter of recalling the surplus forms. Phew. The long and short of it is that if you've already filled in a form YOU WILL get a PS2. Great news.
Sony PR boss David Wilson told us "We were always concerned to treat our consumers with respect - we set out to match the number of forms to the number of units. This was to avoid people paying a deposit and filling out a form for a machine they couldn't get hold of until post Christmas. Now we have been told that Japan can only deliver 165,000 we are seeking out forms that have not been used and recalling them."
So there won't be any shortfall between the number of forms and the number of PS2s? "No - we think we have just about sold the number of machines we will be receiving - so it shouldn't be a case of taking order forms back from consumers - just back from those retailers who haven't sold them yet."
And when will this whole business be over - when will we finally be able to go into a shop and buy a PS2? "Not this year. Our aim is to get them back into stock as soon as possible. After our allocation is made production doesn't stop and we are working to get more as soon as we can. The manager of our plant in Japan that manufactures PS2 has had eight day's off since March 4th (and that includes weekends!) they are working flat out 24/7 to make as many PS2's as they can..."
While the lack of stock is indeed a disaster for Sony (let's face it they'd rather be selling them for #300 apiece than disapointing people) 165,000 launch sales is still an incredible acheivement. Given that Dreamcast sold 37,000 in its first week and PlayStation did 25,000 in its launch weekend selling 165,000 before launch makes this the Uks most successful console launch by a long chalk."
My thoughts: Interesting that there would have still been 35,000+ unreserved consoles despite the hype.
That cant be true of course as the games websites had it up as an official press release!!! I personally will believe the games websites (CVG etc).
Anyway, he also told me that they received their first PS2 game today (Smugglers Run) and they would be putting it on the shelves tomorrow. So it looks like the same situation as the USA. The games will be on sale for the real fanatics (like me) to buy before the system is even here.
Still, I'd rather have this than have them push back the launch even further. At least this way we still have good chance of a pre-Xmas machine.
I think I'll pop into my 2nd home (the local Game store) this weekend to ask them exactly when they sent off their first batch of pre-order forms.
Anyway, Sony is sticking to the line that first come first served basis will apply so if you pre-ordered on the 7th then hopefully you will be okay.
I will of course inform you of my collection date as soon as I get it.
This bloody PS2 stuff is really driving me mad. I almost threw myself under a train when I saw this story in the paper!!!
It's not that there aren't enough units for the European launch. Sony are simply diverting the consoles to North America and Japan. We are the poor cousins to their other world markets.
I have a bad feeling about this.
I pre-ordered my pre-order form (true) back in June...
On the morning of the 7th Sept there was a queue outside Electronics Boutique. Many of these were turned away as they had not pre-ordered their order form (if you see what I mean)
So at 8:30 I managed to get the fables form completed and it looks like I *STILL* may not get one....
What more can we do ? Sony , we have done all that you asked - please relent a little !
I know in 6 months it won't matter that we perhaps have to wait a couple more weeks but right now it does matter , it matters ALOT. When I hear you guys will be the first to know.
UK PS2s Slashed!
After refusing to be cornered on the matter Sony have finally relented and announced that the 200,000 PS2s they lined up for UK launch have indeed dwindled. The revised figure is 165,000 - still a respectable number but one which opens up the possibility of yuletide disapointment for many.
For months Sony have been insisting that prospective PS2 owners pre-order their machine via Sony's official pre-order schemes. An undisclosed number of forms were released with every form directly linked to a PS2 machine available 'on or after launch date November 24th'.
Given that Sony have always insisted that there will be no PS2s available in the shops or from any other source its fair to say that the number of forms distributed was identical to the number of PS2s they were expecting. With this figure dropping 35,000 to 165,000 does this mean that there are 35,000 people out there who now won't get their PS2?
Sony have never promised anyone with a form a PS2 on launch day or even before Christmas but those with forms have, up until now, being resting easy, safe in the knowledge that their PS2 was safe. Now with the revised figures and the confirmation from Sony sources that there will be no additional PS2s after the launch batch things aren't looking anywhere near so festive.
David Wilson, head of Sony PR formerly told us that 'PS2s will be allocated on a first come first served basis' so those who got their forms in first will get one of the pre-January 1st batch. Sony are presently recalling all remaining forms - forms which were due to become invalid on November the 10th anyway - in an effort to keep disappointment to a minimum but the fact remains: If you pre-ordered recently you could be looking at the new year for your machine.
We'll bring you an update to this story and let you know the exact number of disapointed PS2 fans soon.
