So the government are looking at ID cards again.

What is the problem with them ? I was watching the news this morning and the presenter was coming out with the reasons that the Civil Liberties groups are coming out with.

If you go into a shop and pay with your credit card you will have to show your ID card as well - what's wrong with that then ? Surely this will cut down on an enormous amount of Card fraud.

If you go to a chemist to pick up a prescription you will have to show your ID card to prove who you are - So druggies wont be able to get false prescriptions of methadone anymore.

If you go to sign on you will have to produce your ID card to prove your identity - So this will help cut down on benefit fraud then.

The way I see it is that basically the only people who need to worry about having to carry an ID card with you all the time are people who are deliberately trying to break the law. The majority of law abiding citizens have no problem with bringing in such a scheme at all.

Am I right or not ?

fingerprints are a horribly inefficient way of identifying people.

I think ID cards SHOULD be made compulsory for over 16's. Not illegal to leave your house, but certainly a necessity if you want to, say, buy cigarettes, alcohol, or use a credit card etc.

Voluntary schemes are gay. Australian police, hoping to use DNA to catch a killer decided to DNA test 10,000 men. Great idea? No, the scheme was optional. I would be incredibly surprised if the killer stepped up to have his DNA put on record so that he could be sent to prison.

It goes without saying that if the government want to impliment I.D. cards then they would have to be made compulsory. There would be no point whatsoever in a voluntary scheme.

With this in mind, It would, in essence be illegal to step out of your house if you are not carrying your card. It would also be illegal to have the wrong details on your card (i.e. if you changed your address).

As for fingerprints and stuff. Don't we carry our fingerprints with us anyway?

making them foolproof isn't hard, you just need a national database of everyone with a card, and make the ID cards chip based, or magnetically stripped, so they can be read by certain machines. Anyone wanting these machines (a damn good number of high street stores) would have to rent/purchase them from the government, hence more of a decent investment for them.

I havn't read any arguments yet against ID cards that have any credence, yes it will cost an awful lot of dosh to issue them but balance that against the fraud savings alone and the cost will soon be recouped.

Most of europe have ID cards and they work well enough on the continent so why not here ?

Well, personally, I would prefer people to be identity stamped at birth, having say a barcode of sorts digitally imprinted on your brain. However, since we lack the capacity to look at the barcode every time we do something without slowly turning our brains to pulp, ID cards will have to do for now.

Personally I disagree with the idea of identity cards.
I'm not going to try and convince anyone else otherwise because it's a waste of neurons.

I have been for national identity cards for years. They will save the government (and subsequently everyone else) an absolute fortune on any number of things especially as an anti-fraud measure. It may be hassle to whip your ID card out every time you make a transaction, but surely in a couple of years everyone will be used to it?

I don't see a problem with it. My mates (who shall remain unamed) have fake I.D's and this idea will stop them in their underage drinking.
I think it is a good idea as now there will be no more doubt about i.d's you show, i've had that done to me and i had to go all the way back home to drag my parents in the shop just to prove i was 16. Hopefully this would stop it.
