In my personal opinion there are a number of reasons for this which i feel Mr. Bill Gates needs to address before the X-box can turn into the success that he has hoped for.
The Price
Ok This has got to be the biggest problem with the microsoft bad boy. I am not putting anything against the console because i think it has possibly the most potential of all of the next generation consoles. It is the fasted the most powerful and has a top notch DVD player not to mention the memory meaning no memory cards are needed as there is next to an infinite amount of save space. However despite the excellent potential it posesses the console itself is still not worth the £300 price mark they gave on release, even after the drop to £200 it is still struggling because basically who is going to pay that kind of money for something that does not blow away the competition. The games are not too expensive, about average however with the need of a dvd remote to use the dvd feature the cost of the original price soon rises. The competition is too strong for such a price.
The Games
Lets face it this is what you buy a console. Sure you can get 84 controller ports, a 67 dvd disc changer, puker cd player and more tools than a swiss army knife but if you havent got the games to back it up what is the point in being able to even cook ya toast in ya console eh?
It is unfortunate that in the most important factor of the console the X-box fails miserably at present. The only 3 big sellers they had on launch day were
Dead or Alive 3
Project Gotham Racing
and Halo
and lets be honest Gotham Racing while a good game is not on the same level as GT3.. Dead of Alive 3 another classic beat em up but with virtua Fighter 4 now out and Tekken 4 around the corner it just does not have the same appeal. And Halo the supposed best game of the year. While a fantastic first person shooter is heavily overated purely because it was the one major selling point of the X-box and the only "original" big hitting game they had.
I say "original" because the X-box's line up is not at all original now is it, i mean not only are the games they are bringing out not THAT impressive they are not even original. In fact 90% of microsofts games are ported from other consoles or originally planned for another console.
Halo ----> originally a PC game
Dead or Alive 3 ----> DoA2 on PS2
SSX Tricky ---> PS2
Crazy Taxi ----->PS2, DC
Champ Manager -----> PC
Munch's Odsesee(sp) ------ Oringally PS2
Am i making my point yet! the Xbox is relying heavily on the games they are bringing over from other formats. The lineup is just not strong enough and with games like
Return to castle wolfenstein
Unreal Championship
The 2 huge games coming out being pc games and first person shooters. The console needs some huge original games and alot more variety. They are getting killed on the market at the moment. They need more games like Halo and the likes of Panza Dragoon to stay in the console war.
Lets hope Bill pulls his socks up because the Xbox has the potential to be great and altho i still think gates is being greedy trying to conquer another world good luck to him hes got his work cut out.
Online?
Possibly another big selling point of the Xbox was the online gaming, well now E3 is over and the plans have been revealed the UK are getting a raw deal. The Xboxs online plans are being used with broadband and with alot of the UK not able to get broadband at the present time it means we are not all able to play online meaning less profit for microsoft and a lot of annoyed british gamers.
What are everyones views.
THESE ARE JUST MY OPINIONS AND I USUALLY TALK RUBBISH SO....
-Omega-
Max Payne
Spider Man: The Movie
RalliSport Challenge
Dead Or Alive 3
Gun Valkyrie
Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding
Championship Manager 2001/2002
Crash
Moto GP
Jet Set Radio Future
I have rented/own all of these games and I defy you to say they are not awesome. I know you had a problem with RalliSport Challenge and the so called " middle wheel sindrome ", but to be honest I think you are being far too picky when it comes to choosing games, especially with a list looking that good! There are some truly breath taking titles due out in the next few months and before christmas there are a hoast of over 50 titles that I desperatley want to own and I can honestly say that the PS2 never did make me want this many and in the end I owned 8 games and only 2 were any good!
I have now resorted to buying DVDs until I find a game worth buying, but I am worried about when this will be. The only game for the Xbox that I can think of so far is Blinx. And that's going to be a while. I really do hope there will be more games that appeal to me soon. At the moment, I have 4 games I have barely touched, so I'm fine. But thinking about the future starts to make me wonder what I'm going to do.
As for the Broadband isssue, obviously, I can't say it's a *good* thing that microsoft have ignored more than half of the gaming communtity. But they do have their reasons for it. Maybe it would be nice to let people use 56K, but they might be disappointed when they see all the features they can't use. Ahh well, more reason to buy a PS2, eh?

Many people keep mentioning launch line-ups, but let's be honest - that's in the past now, and pretty much irrelevant.
My Xbox hasn't been switched on for 7 or 8 weeks now (possibly 9 - I've lost count), apart from to look at one uninspiring coverdisc from OXM.
I'm tired of Halo and PGR. Munch's Oddysee still inspires, but to be honest I need to be in the right frame of mind to play it, and I haven't been.
But every week, I go into the shops looking for something new to get for it, and I see the same games staring out at me from the shelves. There have been a few additions, but they're not exactly must-have titles.
Okay, it's all a matter of opinion, but I think it is generally accepted that the software at the moment is letting it down. There may be better games coming, but they're months away.
The Xbox isn't down and out, but it seems to be out on its feet at the moment. It landed with a very big bang, but seems to have been stunned by the noise.

Tom, I don't like disagreeing with you (being a sound geezer who talks mucho sense and all that), but I feel this argument is a bit of a cop-out. PC owners have been enjoying respectable online gaming for a few years with 56K and lower.
I think MS should at least provide the option of a 56K connection, as Sony have done, for those who don't have broadband connections. Sony didn't include any connection when the PS2 was launched, for a number of reasons, which I'm sure I don't need to explain to you. But now that things are coming together, they are providing connectivity for anyone.
Talking primarily about the UK now, sales - it has to be said - have not been amazing. Although people won't buy a console specifically for online gaming, I think that MS are limiting their potential audience by excluding non-broadband customers.
The cost of broadband has fallen drastically and is well within reach of most people. However, connectivity is not, with many areas of the UK still years away from receiving the necessary connections. There are two colleagues at work who are desperate to get broadband connections, but they can't - from ANY company - for at least another year, despite living in highly populated towns.
There is no point in MS developing an online strategy based around amazing games if the people buying their console can't connect to the service.

Agreed. The Xbox doesn't seem to be selling as well as consoles like the PS2. But, most sales figures pnly seem to show Japan. Consoles have succeded before, even when they flopped in Japan. I don't think the UK sales are too bad.
In my personal oppnion there are a number of reasons for this which i

Yes, there are quite a few things that need to be done, such as the controller thing. But all these things ARE being addressed, like controllers and price.

I think all that which you just mentioned was worth £300. After all, in march last year, I bought a PS2 for £300, and I still think that was worth it.
even after the drop to

A couple of hundred thousand people so far....Just because you don't think it's worth that much, doesn't mean everyone else thinks the same. Addmitidly, a lot of people do think it's overpriced but it's their loss. I certainly think it is better value than the PS2.
>The games are not too expensive,
If you buy from the right place, the games are the same price as PS2 and GC.
about average however

You need a memory card for the GC and PS2, no? Maybe a multitap for the PS2?
The competition is too strong for such a

It works out as the same as the PS2, or cheaper if you need a multitap for the PS2. What's your problem. Better hardware, same price.

The Xbox, in my oppion and a lot of others, HAS got games to back it up. Although I do admit, the future seems to be lacking in AAA titles.

Rallisport (soon after)
Most of the launch titles were great!

No, it's not on the same level. In my oppinion, it's better.
Dead of Alive 3 another classic beat em up but with

I don't have these games so I can't comment.
And Halo the supposed best game of the year.

No. There are a lot of original titles. And Halo isn't overated! It really is great! Although, like er-no said, it is lacking in reply value. So I'm taking my time with it.

No! The Xbox is NOT the worst console for this! GC is the worst for the lack of original titles. Whereas Xbox has titles such as Halo, Rallisport, Blinx, Oddworld (even though it's a sequal, it really is revolutionary). A lot more than 10% of it's titles are original. I think you're getting mixed up with your consoles.

To be honest, no.
the Xbox is relying heavily on the games

All a matter of oppionion. I don't think Xbox games are getting killed.

It doesn't have the potential to be great. So far, it *is* great! Remember the launch lineup of the PS2? That was crap, be honest. But look at the games it has now! The Xbox could very easily do the same. And what's wrong with Microsoft entering the console market? They have been very good at what they have done so far.

But trying to play with 56K would be pointless! It's just too slow for a lot of the things that Microsoft want to do with the Xbox. I'm sure a lot more people would be annoyed if they had just spent money signing up to 56K with Xboxlive, to find out it's slow, crap, and can play against a maximum of three people. Microsoft are just saving these people their money. If you haven't got Broadband, you might as well not bother.

I have just mention them :-)

Indeed. Your oppinion does matter, unlike what some people would lead you to believe. But so does ours. And that's where a lot of fanboys go wrong. Thankyou for actually putting together a decent post. It really makes it so much easier to try and understand someone else's point of view.
You go on about price.
What?
The XBOX launched at 300, now it's 200 - same as the PS2.
200 quid is very cheap for both the PS2 and XBOX [when you think about what you are actually getting] - viz. a games system and a DVD, and with the XBOX a hard drive and modem.
As for the games on XBOX - just like the GameCube it is very "early" days, so this argument about "it hasn't got any games" is just pointless!
Check out the preview lists of forthcoming XBOX games, then tell me it has only a handful of good games.
XBOX exclusives abound, and we are promised 150 to 200 games by Christmas.
And you proved that you don't know what you're talking about by saying Crazy Taxi is on the XBOX - actually it's "Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller" and it's an XBOX exclusive and it's not out yet.
:)
Very well written topic I thought, completely airing your views on whats wrong with the Xbox and indeed some of the premises were very valid.
I have an XBox. I have given it a chance and as yet it hasn't impressed me as much as I would hoped. Halo is complete in every mode and it just hasn't got the best 'gobackto' value compared to older games.
Still, I am giving it a chance, more than ANYONE could have asked of me four months ago.
