Excellent tool, funkygamer. Shows how easy it is to spoof headers on emails!

However, seeing as though this email is alledgedy sent from "your.momma@####you.com" then the addresses you send it to are no doubt made up as well.

I know. They must just trawl through the user directories getting name / ID's, stick 'em all in a database, and send you a message. Really dubious.

I've got that on ICQ. Every so often I get a message saing something like: 'Chris, how are you, long time no see. I've got a new Cam now and i'm online, wanna come see'. For example, and to begin with, as they said my name directly, I assumed it was someone I know. Only to be sent to porn. Its amazing how these can get your names and send messages like this automaticly.

Thats right, no matter how hard you try and think your safe, there is always a way to getting back to you. Even if we don't know how to, the higher-ups sure do :o).

Jees, how paranoid would you have to be to go that far? I think the common-or-garden porn merchants would not know about that stuff, but the ones who are mega serious would be.

However, you would be surprised what ISP records reveal. Once you have the IP address of someone, you could trace it back to an ISP, once you have the ISP, a police unit then has the authority to demand the ISP records pertaining to a particular IP address at a particular time. That IP address can be traced back to a phone number (for dial ups) or I suppose a certain users for broadband connections. Once you have a phone number or user ID, you can trace it back to name and address. Voila, one busted Paedophile.

All time consuming, but it should work something like that. This thing needs more time and money spent on it.

on the subject of spam, here's what ive done to avoid it... as far as i know its legal, but it is deception so i dunno.... anyway, here goes...:

first of all you pick a name. run a search on Google for popular names, and pick a name in the top 10 at random - e.g. pick a random number betweem 1 and 10, and pick that name. this makes sure there is no connection to you. then go to a geneology site, and find a popular surname the same way. this ensures your name has no connection to u, is believable (e.g. not Joe Bloggs), and cannot be traced back to u.

then go to multimap.com, and click on a random part of the map. keep zooming in until you find a street name, preferably close to a nearby 'Place of Interest' so you can find out about the area and get a postcode. now you have a false name and address.

the next step is to make up your history. the easiest way to do this is to pick things that are common, and you know a bit about, but can easily find out what you need to know - e.g. football, motor racing etc.

pick a name for a wife (if you want) as well as parents and children. make sure you choose a maiden name. now decide on an age similar to your own - this helps to make sure you seem more realistic as you know stuff about ppl that age.

armed with this you can set up a hotmail account or similar, and simply use this as a junk email account. then set up a new account with a free isp using this info. you can use this ID in chat rooms where you want to protect your identity, or whatever. if you are serious about secrecy and privacy, then install a firewall and connect to the internet via a remote proxy. this protects your IP address.

Finally, if you are *really* serious, you can go into the registry and other similar files on your PC, and change all the settings about your computer - e.g. name, USER_AGENT name, and everything else about your PC.

this highlights one of the major issues about pornography and people carrying out illegal activities on the internet - its incredibly hard to trace. if someone visited a site you had created, and started hacking in after setting themselves up as I have said above, how would the police trace them? they would start off with a false IP address, and incorrect details about ur pc. even if they did somehow get this data, they would still end up at a random ISP with false info about you... just makes you think doesn't it....

i started thinking about this when i saw that program called 'A Secret Map of Britain' the other night....
