Phft, It's a stupid idea I know, but Andi is convinced that his XP1800 is "better" than my XP2000. I think he must be retarded or something.

I see the point you are trying to make turbonutter but FPS isnt everything and you will probably find that it is better on other games as quake uses open gl and not direct x, also the chips the P4 is up against are the expensive side of AMD's market, the athlon MP is the server addition to the Xp chip and the P4 they use is the older willamette P4 not the newer northwood which are both desktop cpu's, so they will bench better.

I'll tell you what, anyone who has an Xp machine use sisoft sandra to benchmark your machine and we will compare and i will show you the differance and if i am beaten i will take that athlons are better than P4's.

They have an overheating protection thingy called C.O.P on them.
A good idea as i have killed a few athlons by burnin em up

The oldish argument in the pc market AMD or INTEL most are either 1 or the other but i am both, evem thinking of making second system with dual athlon mp's, is the motherboard you have an ASUS motherboard.

£150 second hand?!!? THAT is why I wouldnt touch a P4, that's rediculous, for that money you get a far superior AMD. Admitedly they do run hot and they aren't great for overclocking, but who cares, for the same money you could an AMD that goes just as fast without overclocking.

Also, I noticed the other day when I started my PC without the HSF plugged in, and as soon as the temps got too high, the computer turned off, so either my XP or my mobo has the feature on it to stop it overheating.

But for the price of a P4 2.4 you could get dual Athlon 1.2ghz which give vaastly more performance - or better, dual XP1600s :-)

I agree at stock speeds the Athlons do out preform the P4's on most applications but thier overclockability is minute compared to the P4 and the heat they produce is so much higher than the P4's, also P4's have a little heat protection thing called "thermal throttling" which stops your chip blowing up on you even when overclocked, unlike the athlons (at the moment) you can run a P4 with the Heatsink and fan off.

Nope, because Athlons go up to 2200 and have superior performance that P4 equivelants, and I mean 2.2ghz P4s, not actual clocks.

And AMDs can overclock too...

I used to think that way until i realised the ease of overclocking the P4, when i first got my 1.8northwood second hand for £150 i put it in my mother board and it gave me 2 options, either run the chip at 1800 or 2400 and that was without any tweaking or anything, and mine runs at 2.6 (145Mhz FSB x 18) with retail heatsink (although i am using water cooling i used to have Heatsink and fan for it) and is rock solid i have it on 24/7 under heavy loads, so if you do benchmarks on my pc and on any other single cpu Athlon out at the moment my pc will walk all over it and some, don't get me wrong i do still have a hotspot for AMD and am looking forward to the realeases of the thouroughbread and sledge\clawhammers they are going to be awsome.
