The new "concept" every designer seems to be jumping on.
Is it just me that thinks it looks rubbish and makes the idea of having a powerful console...well...not necessary?
I want graphics, I want almost-realism or at least stylised but still pushing the envelope.
I don't want something that reminds me of Dogtanian.
What am I missing here? Am I not "cool enough" to get why this horrendous cartoon thing is so good?
I have Jet Set Radio on the Xbox and it sucks for me. Not because of the gameplay but the stupid cartoon graphics.
It makes me feel so removed from the experience of playing, I just sit there thinking "Cartoon crap cartoon crap cartoon crap" and turn it off.
I'm not demanding near-perfect graphics always (would be nice though), just something that makes me glad I spent £££ on a console.
Not some rubbish cartoon with big black edges and rubbish.
I'm sure someone here can explain why everyone is getting moist over cell-shading.
Please?
As I've always said, those Zelda screenshots look to me as though Shigeru Miyamoto decided to gather a compilation of pre-school children's drawings, or that he needed to find a use for the box of crayons his kids never used.
Humm...I must check out that FPS that's cel-shaded...called "13" or something.
I saw some screens for Robotech and thats a game that will benefit from cell shading as its originally anime (Japanese manga for those that don't know). But some games should really steer clear of this style because they just don't go together.
I don't know what your talking about
*wanders off into his world of no games... even thought he posts on a gaming forum*
> If you dont like Cel-shaded just dont buy it.
Why didn't I think of that?
Its going to be increasingly hard to avoid cel-shaded games when more and more developers are adopting the tecnique.
And I think XIII looks crap, especially when its using the unreal 2 engine, which is one of the most impressive graphics engine's I've ever seen. Yet all the nice graphics are overshadowed by naff looking cartoon effects.
Its not exactly if we have a shortage of "realistic" looking games now is it?
Nobody looking forward to XIII? (cel-shaded FPS)
Looks pretty nice to me...
:(
But now it's all going over-the-top and being randomly over-used. Once it was original and fresh, but now it's being used here, there and everywhere - which is stupid and probably lazy.
Realism is all well and good, but I do like to see original graphical styles, which once-upon-a-time cel-shading was.

It doesn't appear to be an easy process that's for sure!
I wouldn't exactly call that a flat looking 2D comic.
