Well - I was in Tesco's last night and the lure of PES2 was too strong so I stuck it in the basket with the milk and bubble bath.

There has been a lot of post's already about the new game but thought I'd add mine here. I wont go into all the stuff about team / player names and stuff cos that's all been done before - but why LOSS TIME ? what's wrong with Injury Time as in previous versions ?

Loaded up and went straight into an International game - easy setting England against Greece just to get used to the new feel etc. Won the game 12-0. .... 12-0 ? ok it was the easy setting but come on - how easy does it have to be ? Give Owen the ball and he just ghosts past eveyone and never misses. Hmmm..

Then moved up to medium difficulty and I must say it improved dramatically . 2-2 draw with the same teams. ( I won on penalties !)

Again moved up to the top level and lost first game 2-1. won the second game 2-1. Much more like it with the gameplay becoming much harder and the results becoming more realistic - England losing to Greece ? definately !

Some of the new animations are very sweet but I'm not sure about the trail that hangs off the edge of the ball when you shoot - that's a bit Fifa-ish to me. Commentary - though improved still misses out in many places. I was also hoping that they would do something to make the control more immediate. I still don't like the fact that you can hit the shoot button but the player will take another stride before reacting by which time it can be too late.

It also feels a bit clunky compared to Tif 2003. I think that Konami could improve the game by having the camera higher like in Tif so that you can actually have a better view of the action - there are times when you think you are passing forward to a player in PES2 and there is no-one there because the player is moving to a different position.

I think - though maybe it due to over familiarity with the control method etc - that PES is becoming too easy to play now, yes there are sopme new moves to get the hang off and some new button combinations etc but the game does seem alot easier to win at than the current version of TIF.

I think that many people have become too enamoured by PES and have just assumed that it will always rule over the opposition. To me - it is still a great game and I will spend hours playing on it but I personally think that TIF and PES now have an equal standing as joint leaders in the football games stakes. Konami need to do some radical overhauling to lift PES once more away from it's competitors.

Heh I love all this football game argumentation. I just by them all for the fun of it. I found what you said about the commentary in the highlights very amusing :D

"Now, lets take a look at this incident"
"This incident completely changed the course of the match"
"Oh, he should have scored that incident, NUMBER 23!"
"Whats this incident? DONI! Should have done better there"
Trevor talking over the top- "Oh thats terrible"
"Onto the next incident. REBROV! Scores the first"

Ect ect.

I couldn't agree more!

As you know, I bought TIF2003 the other week, and loved it.

A friend came round list night, and brought PES2 with him. We had a laugh, but for me the game isn't a patch on TIF2003 - or even on PES1!

The commentary is laughable - probably poorer than PES1. Trevor Brooking sounds more wooden than a tree, and while we may have got rid of "the sun is beating down, but the wind is shooting through the stadium", the new commentary gets equally repetitive. When you watch the highlights at the end of each half, just how many times is the word 'incident' used?!

Then you have the whole of the Dutch squad being named 'Orange 1', 'Orange 2' etc.

The motion blur on the ball is just plain tacky, and the whole thing feels as arcadey as the old FIFA games.

Even the guy at the start who says "Pro Evolution Soccer 2" sounds like he's bored shitless and would rather be working on TIF!

One of the biggest crimes is that the squads are so far out of date - there really is no excuse for that. Arsenal still have Adams and Dixon playing in defence!

And the kits, too - Arsenal's away kit is still the gold and blue from a few seasons ago (now our third-choice kit) - not even last season's yellow and blue!

Yes, I know you can edit all this, but who wants to spend hours messing around with player names and kits? Not me, that's for sure.

The team names are ridiculous. "Europort" for Liverpool is pathetic, not to mention the others; since when was West Ham anywhere near the Lake District???

I understand that you can unlock 'proper' commentary names by winning certain competitions with certain teams, but if that's all in there, why not make it available from the start? No doubt some of you will say that 'it gives you something to play for', but to me it just smacks of desperately trying to add something to a half-finished and poorly presented game.

It seems to me as if the Konami team responsible have done a very large amount of laurel-sitting since PES1, and very little in the way of actual updates. Sure, there are a few modifications to the control system and some presentation updates. And the animations have changed - but not always for the better. Goalkeepers now run like they've just filled their nappy!

The whole thing reeks of a very half-hearted attempt at a sequel. In fact - given the out-of-date kits and squads, lack of player names that were in the first game etc. - I consider it to be worse than the original.

When you look at other sequels released recently (Colin McRae 3, TimeSplitters 2, Red Faction 2) and those still to come (Vice City, Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness), and consider the improvements that have been made, PES2 is something I think Konami should be ashamed of.

If they believe they have the superior game engine (which was true, but with TIF2003 around I'm not so sure), then they should *at least* have devoted considerable time, effort and money to increasing the overall presentation of the game.

They need to get a license for the player names, and make sure they use them. Sort out the squads and the kits. And for pity's sake, do something about that awful commentary system.

I enjoyed PES, but I'll be steering well clear of PES2. I find TIF2003 to be superior in almost every area. Hell, I'd rather buy FIFA2003 than PES2 - and you can't get any more damning than that.

Both fantastic games. The thing I must credit about both of them is the fact they are not clones. Too many games try to clone the best in the genre. Why? Why cant they all be like Team Soho and try and offer players a fresh alternative? Both games rule, bubblebath is nice and fluffy. The End! Now over to you in the studio. Gah!
