They spent 3 years developing Star Fox, and by all accounts, it's a linear piece of toss.
What was it? 5 quality games in 2 years?
HAAHHAAAHAAHA!
Seriously though, discuss...
But that leads on to the main point - were Rare worth $375,000,000 to Microsoft? Perhaps. You see - Rare split up, soon before the somewhat, disappointing Donkey Kong 64 and whilst Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day were still in production.
In fact - it was the main part of the Goldeneye team that left, and some from projects such as Banjo Kazooie. The majority formed Free Radical Design, who have brought us the multi-format classic - Timesplitters 2. Others went to first party Nintendo developers - Retro Studios (Metroid Prime) and Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness).
But there were still quality developers left at Rare. For example - though the main part of Conker was done, these people added the brilliant humour that made us all laugh, but they also added the rather poor levels at the end of PD. And did Banjo Tooie feel a little unfinished when compared to Banjo Kazooie to anyone? Then there were the awful Game Boy Color projects.
So then we're brought onto Starfox Adventures. It's a great game - but after five years in the making and a helping hand here or there from Nintendo, I was really wanting more. If it was Rare's project alone, and developed over say, two years, I wouldn't have doubts but for such a long development time, we were expecting something special. Sadly, it was great, but not in the way epics such as Mario Sunshine have been.
So do Rare still have it? Well, to be fair, we haven't seen them develop a game on their own yet (since the split) - without help. Kameo's looking promising, but a few people left when Microsoft bought them - not wanting to work on the X-Box, which may be worrying for the development team. Then there's the fact that Rare have always been Nintendo's younger brother - replicating the games, just not so well, and having a rather large reliance on the big N.
It'll be interesting to see how Microsoft's new Rare will do, after the splits, without Nintendo and the short development times but let's keep an open mind, eh? Kameo will show us what Rare are capable of, so until then, I'm going to remain impartial. One thing's for sure though - Microsoft bought Rare for the reputation of innovation, and whether or not that's still there, it's going to attract consumers.

Mario Party games are the dogs nuts actually punk!!
Try Cruising USA for a Nintendo feck up.

What's everyone got against DK64? it wasn't original and was a bit repetetive but I still thought it was a superb game.
Starfox however is a load of balls, I just hope Rare pull their fingers out and don't feck up the Xbox games. They may be on Xbox but I still want Rare to release good games. A good Banjo games may be enough to get me to buy an Xbox.

Rare haven't released any games that have been crap have they?
Obviously something is wrong for this game to be as crap as it is!
We'll just see what happens, maybe Rare have lost that touch that they used to have?
This seems to be the way Ninties are looking at Starfox. ;-)
Before they got it, it was "Yeah well Nintendo played a massive part in it, its hardly even Rare's game". Now that its turning out to be a letdown, its suddenly a Rare game with no mention of Nintendo's involvement. ;-))
Theres a couple of Ninties at my work that have been like this. While they moaned about the weekend playing a stinker, I was busy crowing about my mech I'd built in Phantom Crash and how I've been enjoying Mech Assault as well. ;-)

Yeah. Alot of Nintendo lovers have gone all Anti-Rare ever since the move.
Starfox was co-developed by Nintendo/Rare, So the gameplay/storyline and ideas would of mostly come from the Nintendo side of things, obviously as they own the franchise.
5 Quality games ? Yep, don't see why not, Kameo looks good, and Perfect Dark 2 ? There is no feasible way that can fail.
Strange isn't it, how Nintendo fans have decided Rare are suddenly crap, now that Rare don't work for Nintendo anymore, yet when they did Rare was Nintendo's top developer...
