I ask because I've just got myself a 90w Fender amp, which sounds lovely on the clean channel. And I'm using a crappy Strat copy. It's sounding pretty damn nice on the neck pickup. And it sounds pretty good on the bridge too with a little bit of chorus.
It has two drive channels but despite this the distortion is still a little thin... But I'm using an MT2 metal zone distortion pedal too which gives me all the distortion I could ever want.
I did try a couple of Marshalls out but to be honest their clean tone didn't touch Fender's. They had much better distortion, but I was going to be using a pedal anyway, so it didn't really matter.
What size strings are you using then? I've got some 11's on right now but I ordered myself a few packets of 11/12 (I think - it went up to 52 on the low E anyway) hybrids a few days ago. I started off on 9s and have been slowly working my way up... Because the fatter strings really do sound better.
As for my stuff, I didn't think the guitar makes much difference (and it really doesn't), except newer guitars tend to be nicer sound-wise. I think it's because the strings are closer to the frets and stuff. But personally I prefer playing older guitars (like the one I have) where the strings are further away, because I have big hands.
I have a Cry Baby wah wah and a couple of delay pedals and stuff by lesser names. My amp is a nice old Demon. Unfortunately it's not clean specific. I've kept it all this time because it creates the most brilliant bass sounds and is truly superb for amplifying distortion and lower notes. To go with this In use hybrid strings. (Top 3 are comparitively thicker than bottom 3) Again because I like more bassy sounds. As a result, most of the riffs I write involve mixing the top strings with a big jump to the bottom strings to create really funky strange stuff.
Sorry I can't really speak from experience. But I'd just reccommend a new guitar with low lying strings, a really good amp like a Marshall or something. As for pedals, that's up to you.
That's using the clean side of your amp rather than an acoustic?
What kind of guitar/amp/pedal set up do you have?
