I'm shocked.
Well, not shocked, but surprised.

I still have 3 packets of them left... I'll probably never use them. I started going heavier because I started tuning down to D quite often and they used to wobble around like elastic bands and so I tried 10s then 11s and I just found they sounded much better. But 11's can be a real bicth to control bends and such in standard and I don't think I'll be going any heavier on the treble strings.

the guitar makes a LOT of difference to the tone dude. the woods used, pickups (although obviously these can be changed) the weight, body shape, etc. there are a lot of variables to consider.
also, closer strings means more fret buzz and if the action is higher then all you're doing is wasting energy pushng the strings back. if you have bigger hands then:
1) tell lots of women about them :)
and
2) get a gutar with a thicker neck or a more pronounced profile. this will probably more comfortable and you won't put unneccessary pressure on the fingers.
this is the best thread i've seen all day :)

Fender's are nice, but for some reason, they just don't tick the boxes. I played some clean stuff on my friends Fender amp and it sounded pisss poor compared to my old Demon. When I hacked, it sounded better on the Fender than on my Demon, but had odd spikey notes, where it sounded bad, which just come out more smoothly on mine. I've played on new Marshalls in shops and they were my faves.

I'm at the beginning of that trend. I had some middle of the range ones on, but now I've gone up to a 9, 11, 16, 26, 36, 46, which are sexy as hell. So I think I'll contine in the same trend as you.
Generally for playing clean though, everything sounds good as long as you buy top quality stuff. I mean a low action and stuff helps, but quality is the way.
