Doesn't look as though Webber was particularly happy with 'that' move!

I gave up on F1 a few years ago (when it went all Mario Kart) but today it looked to me as though the drivers themselves are fed up with all the BS that totally killed my interest in that sport. All of the top 4 had faces like smacked bums after the race. Are team orders actually banned in F1 these days? or is it something of a grey area?, giving drivers code words to hold station etc. is a joke.

...and why are McLaren so crap now?

BTW I only watched the 10 minute highlights thing on the BBC website so perhaps I am missing something?

Yeah I've seen that - controversial but when the BBC coverage is over later on this afternoon I'll give my view on it.

Raikkonen carries on his good form:

Australian GP winner Kimi Raikkonen served further notice of Lotus's competitiveness by topping an incredibly tight second practice session at Sepang prior to the interruption of the first rain shower of the weekend.

The Lotus driver edged the pack on both the hard and medium compound tyres during the quicker afternoon session but there really was little to choose between the three teams which, on the compelling evidence of Albert Park last Sunday, have the most competitive overall packages so far in 2013 with the lead Red Bull and Ferrari both within a tenth of a second of the Finn.

With Raikkonen setting a best lap of 1:36.569 just as the first few spots of rain were beginning to fall in the middle of the circuit, World Champion Sebastian Vettel had earlier posted a time which was a mere 0.19s slower for Red Bull with Ferrari's Felipe Massa also a mouth-wateringly close margin - 0.092s - back.

Indeed, the top six of the timesheet was dominated by the aforementioned trio's cars - Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Romain Grosjean lining up fourth through sixth - with a clear - and substantial - gap in laptime back to the rest, on notoriously unreliable practice evidence at least.

However, Mercedes, who finished with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in seventh and ninth places respectively, didn't appear to show much of their single-pace hand as the Brackley team deliberately spent the start of the session concentrating on heavier fuel runs as they looked to improve the tyre degradation issues experienced over the longer distance in Melbourne.

As in Practice One, McLaren were just over a second off the ultimate pace of Red Bull with Sergio Perez and Jenson Button separated by three hundredths of a second on the fringes of the top ten.

"We did our race work at the beginning of the session, slightly back to front because this rain was anticipated," Mercedes boss Ross Brawn told David Croft during Sky Sports F1's Pit Wall Live feature.

"I think with the situation at the last race doing the race work was important and we had some good runs with both cars. So at least we have that information."

The rain, when it hit with just under half of the session completed, wasn't as notorious as it usually is at Sepang and after a brief lull in track action cars were soon out on track on intermediates.

Indeed, it wasn't too long after that when, amid the ever-oppresive Malaysian temperatures, the track had dried sufficiently for slicks to be pressed back into service, although the best times ultimately remained a handful of second slower than the earlier hot pace.

Outside the usual suspects at the front, Force India again had an edge over their midfield rivals - and struggling McLaren - as both Paul di Resta (eighth) and Adrian Sutil (tenth) sneaked into the top ten.

However, it wasn't completely plain sailing for the latter in particular who missed the closing stages of the session as Force India mechanics worked to fix a problem on his VJM06.

The sweeping Sepang track, during both the dry and wet running, caught out numerous drivers with both Caterham drivers spinning and Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg doing the same - albeit in the pitlane entry road following the onset of the rain.

British rookie Max Chilton propped up the timesheets at the end of his first day as an F1 driver at Sepang, the 21-year-old completing relatively few laps - 23 - as Marussia took time to alleviate severe rear tyre wear issues. At the start of the session Chilton's car right-rear tyre had developed a massive flat-spot within a handful of laps.

Rest of qualifying should go smoother if its not raining.

Hopefully I'll be able to actually sit down and watch the race after lunch.

Alonso being realistic or pessimistic?:

Fernando Alonso believes the opening grand prix of the new season is likely to be won by either a Red Bull or McLaren driver - but has predicted Ferrari can finish on the podium in Australia.

Although a realistic Alonso admitted to Sky Sports F1 at the final Barcelona test that Ferrari and their F138 were still "a little bit behind the top teams", he has continued to reiterate that they are in much better shape than the eve of the new season last year when their F2012 trailed well over a second off the pace.

Indeed, speaking at a Ferrari media event at the Circuit de Catalunya following the culmination of the final test, he said that at least a two-place improvement on last year's Melbourne result should therefore be well within their grasp, even if their traditional rivals will start as favourites for the victory.

"Last year we were 1.6 seconds behind the best and finished fourth [sic. fifth]," Alonso was quoted as saying by Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport.

"This year we should be on the podium. There is no reason to believe that this will not happen in the first race.

"But these were just tests. It's like after watching Nadal or Federer training you can predict who is going to win the Roland Garros [tennis]. But it is clear that a Red Bull or McLaren should win."

Having overcome their early-season struggles last year to take the drivers' title fight with Red Bull all the way down to the wire in Brazil, Alonso has warned his rivals he personally feels in even better shape for the start of his fourth season at Ferrari.

He also suggested that even a car that was just a handful of tenths off the ultimate pace would more than suit him.

"Always you can improve and I'm ready to do so. Last year was my best year of my career and I was very happy with the performance. But I think this year will be better because I prepare better, I'm more motivated than last year," he said on Sky Sports News.

"I'm better than last year, but also it's true I need better car than last year because we were too far from the leaders. So I expect the team to have a better car and give Felipe and me a [more competitive] car. We don't ask [for] half a second in front of everybody, but two tenths behind everybody is okay."

Vettel says this season's winter testing period was the "least conclusive" ever:

World Champion Sebastian Vettel believes Formula 1's teams head into the new season on the back of the 'least conclusive' winter ever.

The culmination of the 12-day winter testing period on Sunday at the Circuit de Catalunya continued to provoke even more questions that concrete answers regarding the form book ahead of the first race in Melbourne, with no one seemingly quite sure who is in the most competitive shape, or crucially, to what degree.

Vettel's own Red Bull team remain the favourites heading to Australia but Mercedes' eye-catching late winter surge to the top of the timesheets has suddenly thrust the Brackley team firmly into the spotlight, whereas there are also many unknowns over McLaren, Ferrari and Lotus' true form over both long and short runs.

And while testing timesheets are historically often an unreliable guide at the best of times, Vettel says the high levels of tyre graining experienced by the whole grid during all three winter tests has skewed the picture like never before.

"We have never had a winter that was less conclusive than this one," the Triple World Champion told Sky Sports News at the end of his on-track preparations for this title defence.

"Tyres last, if anything, one lap - for some people [it] may be different than others depending how much temperature you're able to create - so I think it's impossible to read the pace of the car and therefore to make out the favourites.

"I think it's not that easy but we will know in Australia."

The unpredictable performance teams were finding with Pirelli's softer 2013 tyres, which was first put down to an atypically abrasive surface at Jerez and then generally cool temperatures across the two weeks at Barcelona, meant drivers were often able to get more than one or two consistent timed laps during a stint before the rubber fell away.

Vettel admitted Red Bull found the inconsistency stymied proper set-up comparisons - but did stress that the situation could turn on its head come the expected warmer climes of Melbourne, thus effectively rendering the timesheets of the Spanish winter meaningless.

"It was extremely difficult to read some set-up changes and find the direction with the car because the tyres were simply not good enough," he declared.

"I think the last two days were fairly good in terms of weather - blue skies, sunshine, it wasn't very cold and the asphalt was quite warm - but the tyres were still poor, so we need to see.

"[We will] look into the data between now and Melbourne to understand a little bit more and then we probably know what expects us in Australia and for the beginning of the season - but it could all be different.

"So I think therefore lap times are not important and where we are now on the timesheet is not that important."
