How long do people think the N64 has left to live?
With games like Perfect Dark, Zelda: The Continuing Sage, Turok 3, A Resident Evil game, Top Gear Rally 2, and a bunch of other wicked games this year. How long will the N64 live for? Specially with the PS2 and Dolphin on the horizon how much longer can the N64 last?
Cooky
After months of speculation this tactically stealthy shoot-em-up was released. At the same time as another tactically stealthy shoot-em-up.
If you haven't realised what I'm talking about yet, it's Operation Winback, under that shadow of Perfect Dark. This once eagerly awaited title has fallen by the wayside. There was no advertising campaign. Minimal press coverage. Nobody has wrote anything in the Operation Winback forum. Special Reserve didn't even give it a review.
Could this be because it never lived up to all it promised? Well, Special Reserve gave it a 'Recomended Rosette' in June, for all the signs the game lived up to all the promises. Of course, due to the very nature of the problem, I for one can't gather any first hand evidence to either support it or reject it, since myself and all my N64 owning friends have spent all our money on Perfect Dark.
Just bad timing then? It would seem so. Unfortunate , especially since Nintendo need all the high profile, quality releases they can get.
But most of all, it's the gamers' loss. It would seem we've just missed out on a gem because the people we depend upon to guide us through the dodgy releases to the worthwhile games have been totally single minded, following the hype towards one shining light. Or Dark.
You have to persevere to unlock all the cars but its worth it (especially when you unlock the police car because you can then put on the siren and watch the other cars stop as you race past them!)
> NINTENDO DOLPHIN - questionable name
> PLAYSTATION 2 STOCK SHORTAGE - oh well
> CLASSIC GAMES - jumping jack - sinclair spectrum. anyone got it on emulator?
> PERFECT DARK - GOOD AS THE HYPE? damn right it is
> GAME PRICES - LUDICROUSLY HIGH and GETTING BETTER
> FOOTBALL GAMES - ISS easily better than FIFA. but where is iss millennium?
Anyway, to get back to the point, I asked myself “what is the best driving game for the N64”? After 5 seconds of careful consideration I came up with the answer. Which I’ll tell you in a while. First, though, here are the games in contention: Ridge Racer 64, Top Gear Rally 2, F1 World Grand Prix (2) and World Driver Championship. Sorry, Star Wars Racer doesn’t count, because you ain’t got wheels, and Mario Kart doesn’t count because, er, you can’t change gear, oh, and you can’t sit in the cockpit.
So these four games are all very different on the outside, but at the end of the day, what you want from a racing game is the feeling that you are there in control of the vehicle (and a spoonful of speed), so they’re all in the running.
Ridge Racer looks good. It is the fastest of them all. The handling takes some getting used to and the courses are a little samey but overall it is a very slick little game.
TGR 2 also suffers from samey courses, once you have experienced the four set scenery types, of which the alpine (snowy) tracks are by far the best. Pleasing number of cars. However, having to replace a tyre every 40 seconds tends to grate the nerves after a while, which drains a lot of the fun from charging around oblivious to obstacles and other drivers.
The F1 WGP games do look great and are fun for a while, but tend to be aimed at the more serious F1 fans. They prove difficult to get into and lack the instant appeal for those of us who want to throw our machines around a course for a 5 minute blast. Rather, the attraction lies in beating lap times and being part of the F1 atmosphere. Also, you can’t powerslide around corners. Bummer.
World Driver Championship will have you wondering why you bought it for the first few hours. This is quite simply because it starts off very sluggishly. I was wondering whether my joypad was broken the first time I tried to throw a large heap of metal around a corner at speed. But it gets better. A hell of a lot better. And it looks stunning, making Ridge Racer 64 look every part a Playstation port. The colours are so much richer and courses so much more varied. At times, racing itself takes a back seat. Drive in Kyoto at night, or Zurich on an icy morning, turn off all on-screen displays and select front of car view (and hi-res if that’s your thing) and you will drive lap after lap purely to admire the scenery. Damn, it’s pretty.
So there is a clear winner. World Driver Championship IS the best driving game around at the moment (did I mention its perfect slide-happy handling?), followed by Ridge Racer 64.
Just one more thing. If you want to race against a mate, stick to Mario Kart (unless you are both/all very used to the way the cars handle in the four games above).
