They where great friends within the industry, Nintendo and Squaresoft.
We all know what went wrong in the end.
But the Question still poses: 'Are Square better off with Nintendo?'
Considering the company enjoyed the successful releases of Nine Final Fantasy games with Nintendo, they know each other more than we would think.
In reality those where the days when not only did we see hugely enjoyable Final Fantasy titles on the Super Nes, more so than we have ever saw on Playstation 1&2!, but other true masterpieces of pure genius such as Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger (Which was in high demand on import lists).
Yip, those where the days, which have failed really to emulate the same sort of success on the Sony machines.
It's true!, they might have pulled in a large amount of notes with Sony, but the games are Nintendo fabric and are best suited with the company.
Their reputation with Nintendo's quality is important in the long run.
Square even know that too, they tried their best cuddling up to Nintendo on pure sight and knowledge of what the Gamecube was capable of, they knew it was a system to elevate their success even further and bring them back to the good old days.
But of course, the big Dinosaur stirred.
Nintendo are brutally arrogant, I know that, they have Yamuchi San to thank for that and it is partly this reason if we don't see Square with Nintendo today.
And from the looks of it Square are still trying their luck stating that out of all system's, the Gamecube brings forth ease coupled with brute power. But how do they know about the Gamecube? Do they have Nintendo GC Development tools in-house?
Who knows, but they are hinting continuously of a new liking for Nintendo, 19 % or no 19% Sony stake involved.(Perhaps Nintendo will move in with a bigger stake?)
But ive said my piece, Square are better off with Nintendo, whether you like it or not.
But that's my opinion.
It's time for Nintendo to move on- Bringing Square with them. And then we will see a true beast within gaming, that is so needed.
But the Gamecube has Resident Evil to live on..... May 24th Euro release- www.computerandvideogames.com
Are you doing your bit? :-D
Making games for the GBA would erase this debt almost instantly but that won't happen because... blah, blah, etc, etc, etc...
The argument is settled.
Sony are happy to have FF exclusives.
Squaresoft are screwed because they can't make GBA games.
And Nintendo are happy to see Squaresoft screwed.
Isn't it a happy gaming world we live in! :-)

Quite wrong.

That is a huge amount of money, im wondering are they in

Errr... but once the game IS RELEASED it will easily get far, far more than this. Shenmue on the DC cost c. £40million, was sold only to an audience fo 10million DC gamers, and that made a fairly decent profit.
So you don't think that the FF games will make dozens of times more?

Quite wrong. What you are forgetting is that Square spent roughly £18m on the production of FF10.
That is a huge amount of money, im wondering are they in profit yet with it? Or have they past their investment target of 18m?
But times have changed. Sony's consoles have a far bigger user base than Ninty's, and money is everything.
As for the GBA, Square DON'T "need" to develop for it. Granted the FF film lost tens of millions, but the fact is that Square will recoupe this money in no time once the PS2 FF games are released. The actual amount of money made on GBA games seems to be VERY over rated by some- remember, the console still hasn't acheived the user base of the orginal GB yet!

The GBA is successful enough without Final Fantasy.
Square needs the GBA, Nintendo don't need Square.
And Nintendo don't like Square - for good reason too.
But Nintendo would be nice to Square if Square would be good to them, which they can't.
Bleeders, although Square are probably a bit overrated, they're still seriously big in Japan. Final Fantasy releases are national holidays over there...
As I said, Square could easily port their Wonderswan games to the GBA, and make loads of money from it. But Nintendo, being the arrogant fools they are, will only let them do this if they go for GC development too...
Which is near impossible for Square to do! They are part owned by Sony, get cheap publishing fees on the PS2 by staying exclusive to that console, and have got too much tied up in PS2 development to allow them space for GC development.
Oh, as for development on the PS2 being harder than the GC, this DOES NOT affect Square- they have enough money and resources to code efficiently for any platform, even the PS2. Smaller developers are the ones who suffer at the hands of Sony's architecture, forcing them to use middleware (which just won't go away!).

Apart from there hay-day, when there were content with knocking out quality RPG's that was based solely on the gameplay, they've not offered anything ground-breaking or for that matter, new.
The vastly over-blown Final Fantasy franchise has become more and more like an interactive movie than a game with each passing installment. What happened to relying on good foundations to build a game on? What happened to the mechanics of good gameplay? I can understand that Square have moved with the times so to speak, but in view, they've forgotten about the underlying mechanics and have gone with the technology to create an impressive, believable experience, but is it a full-filling one?
These are entirely my views and not necessarily those of anyone elses :)
I think many people think the same thing, As long as it's on the system I own I couldn't care less about ports etc
