Okay, after Friday's fun little trip to GAME Nottingham I ventured back today to pick up Command And Conquer Generals. The idea controlling the US military and ahhnilating all opposition finally broke my enforced no PC game buying rule. So, handed over the money, get home, install it, run it, start first mission. PC crashes on loading and goes to desktop with "Serious error occurred". I install new drivers, get Dirext X 9, reinstall, get the three patches for it, try again..."serious error occurred"

Look to the internet for help - now just over two hours since returning from Nottingham and closest I've got to gaming was playing snake on my nokia whilst it installed.... find the problem on the tech support pages, find that Westwood blame it on many things, mostly the end users PC's, offer no explanation, and claim it is rare. Search for term on Google, find it is so rare that every C+C Generals forum out there has at least a topic about it, so not rare.

Get fed up, return to Nottingham - now third time in two days, get money back, will not be buying any PC game ever again....

Morals of the story;

Xbox isn't a PC, it lets you play games for starters.
GAME still suck.
Erm........

And I repeat myself (as I'm sadly so often forced to) that if you can't get a game to work despite meeting the reuired specs, then you're not maintaining your system correctly. Personally, I have very few such problems, and enjoy a level of gaming that goes beyond any level of challenge ever presented to me by console games.

But hey, if you haven't got the ability to maintain a PC, then by all means go for the idiots foolproof gaming package of a console.

And as they say, a bad workman blames his tools.

Still ironic that you buy a game purely so you can live out your US fantasies only to find it doesn't work.

Works fine on mine if that helps. Shoddy game though, you aint missing anything

Got it in one gamezfreak, thats exactly my point.

I paid 29.99 for a new game, which my PC should easily be able to handle, and it still didn't work, and all Westwood say is it is an issue they cannot replicate themselves, yet there are many people online who have the problem. At least with Xbox and other consoles you buy the games knowing full well they will work as they should.

Goatboy/Insane Bartender, I understand what you are saying, But I think Star Fury is trying to highlight the fact that console gaming does'nt come with the hassle of sorting out PC specifications ect.

Ignore me.

Told people in the Xbox forum I'd changed names, besides I thought you'd notice......

I'd imagine Bush is quite pleased - Increased strikes on Iraqi AA, C+C, and artillery positions, B52's and other aircraft moving to forward deployment areas, Kuwait allowing in more US and allied troops, so overall not bad I'd say, though I'm just guessing.

Star Fury = Belldandy
Didn't you think it was strange how two people had Gamertag Star Fury as tag line ? If you looked at other forums you'd see it's not just an isolated case of the game not working.

How many Xbox games have failed to work at all ? None, therefore in my opinion it sucks when a PC which is the value of about 6 Xbox's when bought, cannot run one game. That is totally crap as far as I'm concerned.

I state my personal opinions yet never tell everyone else to listen or think the same.
I point out my feelings and why I feel like that, without demanding others aqquiesce to my viewpoint.

Try harder.

But that's not what Belldandy is saying. Look at the topic title. PC gaming sucks because he can't get a game to work.

Ignoring the fact that the vast majority of people who have bought the game don't seem to have any problems with it, why does not being able to make a game work (whether through a poorly maintained computer system or just sheer incompetence) translate as PC Gaming is crap, and inherently inferior to the XBOX?

No, moral of the story "Westwood couldn't code a bug free game despite over two years work, ergo westwood are crap"

And if a 2ghz PC , 256mem, 80GB HD, Geforce4 can't run a new game then it most definitely does mean that the game is crap, note how my PC more than matches the specs, and has a card supported by it, and has everything updated, yet still the game gave that error. Damned if I'm waiting for Westwood to do another patch.
