I went into a club shop recently with the intention of buying both THPS3 AND a Modem just so I could play it online.
I asked a simple question about this and the member of staff stared at me as though i'd just spoken in an alien language. They didn't even know such a capability existed. When I found myself explaining something to them (as opposed to the other way around) I gave up and forgot about buying it.
Didn't fill me with confidence knowing that I couldn't get straight advice.

i've got that modem on my pc (the usb one that is) but i don't have Tony hawk 3 but i'm gunna rent it when i get the chance

For those of you who want to connect via a 56K external modem then a Diamond SupraMax is the answer, if I remember rightly, it isn't the Plus one or whatever, just the standard SupraMax. It's about £40 from PC World or somewhere like that.
As for Cable modems, check out the official Tony Hawk's 3 website for compatibility or alternatively, check out the GameFAQS Tony Hawk 3 board for advice.
