yeh but this could put people off and temting them to buy xbox or gamecube

It's like saying why don't Sony make old PSone controllers and multi-taps compatible with PS2 - because they want to make money. People will be forced into buying a card as otherwise they can't progresss on any games that they buy. Also, the new memory cards have a new programming style (i.e the pictures are in 3D etc) aswell as them featuring the cherished MagicGate technology. It is easy for Microsoft with the xbox as they do not have to worry about backward compatibility like Sony's Playstation 2.
