Well, although it wasn't well publicised, Sony bought the company... and with it, all their expertise in handheld gaming (as well as some great licences like King of Fighters and Metal Slug).
So, how long do you think it is that Ninty see a cometitor on the hamdheld scene... it must have been in development for some time already!

Yes, you can buy music on MD, but they're not as widely available as CDs. And Sony do a range of hi-fi units/copiers. Go to www.sony.co.uk click on 'Products' and then on 'MiniDisc'.

Sorry, but MiniDisc copiers are standard audio equipment. MiniDisc is a proprietary Sony technology, and they make numerous MD hi-fi's and PC kits.
I have a Sony MZ-E900 player and a Sony MDS-PC3 recorder which is currently connected to my PC, but can also connect to my hi-fi.
MiniDisc is a far more versatile system than CD, and has had features from the start which are only recent additions to CDs; and the CD implementation is still inferior.
My recorder/player feature MDLP - MiniDisc Long Play - which allows me to record up to 4 CDs onto one 74-minute MD. Obviously there is some quality loss, but only music purists would be bothered by this - when played back through the MD player headphones it sounds no different to any portable CD or MP3 player. And a box of 10 blank MD's is far cheaper than expanding the memory of an MP3 player; I can record 40 CDs for at least a quarter of what it costs for a 64Mb memory expansion for my Rio 500, which will only give me an extra 2 hours of equivalent-quality music.
In fact, I'm so happy with my MD equipment that I'm selling my Rio 500 MP3 player, should anyone be interested!
Oh, and check out http://www.minidisc.org for all the info you could need about MiniDisc technology.

It's not the next thing 'after' G3, it's in place now (since Feb 99) and is the default system for all mobile phone networks in Japan. http://imodelinks.com/desktop/faq.html

No, the minidisk recorders are MUSIC. To record data, you would have to have something different (and a lot more expensive) or plug it into your PC. Just like you can't copy a playstation game with one of those hi-fi CD recorders.
In reply to UK vamp, maybe they could make minidvd or something. I don't think its impossible, although the price may be increasing too much. It would be worth paying extra for a sony one than the GBA though (IMO), and with mass production it would probably get cheaper.

Errrm nice idea Tom but the minidisk is just a compression there's not enough room for all the data and yes you can by pre-recorded mini disks it's just people don't cause it's stupid as there like £15 which is cheaper to buy a CD and a blank mini disk to copy it to.
and people would eventualy find away to copy it. i know a site that sells a GBA copier, what it does is you download the GBA rom from an illegal site then put it onto the writable rom with the gadget and that's it.
Plus there was another gadget years ago that let you put snes games on floppy disk thats how all the roms got on the web.
Anyway enough of my nerdy ness
> lol, Sony didn not buy the rights to SNK, a Japanese toy company did, sorry!!
Are you sure? Maybe the toy company bought the rights to sell the Neo Geo Pocket colour, BUT Sony definately bought the whole of SNK (theactual company and staff)...
Oh, and the NGPC was a brilliant handheld... as good as the GBA, with some of the best beat em ups ever (on a handheld)... inc many capcom, and SNK vs Capcom (SNK and Capcom are the 2 best 2d fighter games makers, and they joined up to make one game! How good!!!)
