Long but very well put and very valid for those who don't understand the concept of "Cross Browser" delivery.

I've bannged on before about the inportance of making things work across all browsers using the wonderful phrase "Degrade Gracefully" but a lot of people still think that they only need to work with IE!!

As for AOL and NS... NS6 has become their packaged browser nad is starting to have an impact on the industry... But then again, I love NS6 now I've learn't all of it's little quirks and enjoy coding for it... WILL SOMEONE PLEASE BURN OR KILL NS4!!

Remember boo.com? They had an IE-only version of thier site, which meant that NS users could not go to the "checkout" to purchase goods. This was bad enough, but they also realised that whilst they were trying to generate publicity lots of journalist were viewing the site on a Mac in ... NS! Great, so now not only could NS users not buy stuff, but also, journalists thought the site didn't look that good ('Cos they thought that Mac and NS users were in the minority).

The management team at boo.com layed a part of their failure on the fact that journalists slagged them off for not being able to buy...

In my experience, clients who are paying for a web site want it to work in everything, because I can guarantee you that once a site goes live and the client starts getting feedback, there will be a few e-mails that say "I use Netscape and your site looks crap" - you try telling a client who has just payed 10k+ for a web site that you couldn't be arsed with Netscape users, they don't think it is funny.

Also, put it this way.

Say, for example, the whole network of SR sites gets 100,000 unique visitors a day,

5% of that (using Netscape) is 5000.

Now say only 1% of that (thats 50 people) actually want to buy something at from SR, say, an estimated average price of just £10 (though I suspect your average may be higher). That means you could be losing an average of £500 per day, just by not supporting Netscape. £500 x 365 days in a year = £182,500.

Now, my sums might be wrong, but you get the picture. You lose money by making it hard for certain browser to get the best from your site.

Also, AOL have bought out Netscape, this could mean that NS becomes the preffered browser for AOL. Then what happens? Netscape rules again... What do I tell my clients when they come back to me and say "AOL users can't use my site"?

Damn. What a long post!

Can I ask where you got these from?

You have to remeber that if these are based on something like this site, a majority of PC users go with what's installed on their PC's, hence the high number of IE's here, especially in the UK. If you were to look at the USA, NS has a much higher hold based on several figures including larger adoption of Mac's and that AOL now use NS as their standard browser...

Stats are only relevant to certain people. My life is spent looking at stats and designing sites around them depending on which area of academia my site may be aimed at. Science boffins all use Linux/Mozilla, Historians still use IE3+ or text based browsers (god help us!!).

Our main site is almost split 50/50 between MS and IE and we get over 1+ million unique visitors worldwide per month, this doesent count the 300+ sub sites, portals and online apps we also own, all of which the stats vary quite significantly.

TurboNutter... You'd like my latest baby as it's aimed mainly at Linux!! As this has shown to be the largest platform for this site!! Might get you to do some testing for me next week!!
