Ok, i think it does involve a little guesswork, but heres how I got it.


From question:

Let x be the value for a three twins, y for Rasta, z for Willie

5(x+y) = 6(x+z)

therefore:
5x + 5y = 6x + 6z which is x - 5y + 6z = 0

We know Willie only takes one piece of land for himself so:

x - 5y + 6 = 0


Heres the guesswork. We know the land must add up to a square ie 1,4,9,16,25,36,49 etc

so x + y + z must equal one of the above (or a greater square)

Also, as z = 1, we can simplify the equaion to x + y = (a square - 1)


Then solve the two simultaneously, and check results the same way you disproved Maddmun.

Think thats the best way to do it?
