I've finally taken the plunge and bought a shiny new HTC Wildfire running Android!
All's going well but I'm having trouble setting up my Freeola email account. Similar to this previous post I can receive but not send email.
I'm using Freeola's SMTP auth outgoing server address. I think the issue is the HTC email app doesn't have an option for 'requires authentication', but I am using the 'login required' option with my Freeola credentials. This all 'verifies' successfully and allows the account to be setup but when I go to send a real email it fails with 'settings incorrect'.
I've tried port 25 and 2025 - just in case.
I'm with VirginMobile who don't have an outgoing server for non ISP customers to use :¬(
Any idea how I can get this to work?
I have a get-around by using Gmail's outgoing server with port 587 and the TLS security option. This works but isn't completely ideal for me as some email clients will see the 'sent on behalf of...' message along with my Gmail address.
Thanks in advance.
[s]Hmmm...[/s] Following the Google Android settings on Freeola Support and my own 'messing' ... POP3 left at 110 but SMTP changed from 587 to 25....all works! Not a problem, immediate connection, delivery and retrieval....isn't life strange. Did you try the Google Android device suggestions?
Wishing you well :¬)
Hi DL,
You lost me there. Have you a link to these settings you mention?
NB. Receiving has always worked, you need to make sure you've turned wireless off and are using your mobile data connection!
:¬)
[s]Hmmm...[/s]EDIT: I've found these http://freeola.com/support/e-mail_android.php which is basically what I've been doing all day :¬P
Not sure what it means by "...you need to select the 'Email' button from the main menu..." My phone only has the Mail App (looks like it's by HTC) and the email apps that I've installed to test things.
Thanks DL,
I'm glad it's not just me that's had problems! ;¬)
Obviously your Samsung Galaxy S won't be using the HTC Mail app.
Sorry Hmmm ... but some bad news :¬(
Me being me, and reading your dilemma, I decided to give it another go...just for 'testing purposes' now that Froyo has had a recent update.

Eccles,
You could well be right. But I'm not really sure what the 'official' Android mail app is. The old forum link you gave contains a link to a broken page. Even the new just released Android Market site which still has issues doesn't show it (to me!).
Mind you it's pretty clever how you can pick and install something from the website and it downloads/installs like magic to your phone! :¬)
I've tried the Android K9 email app which gets rave reviews but also fails.
[s]Hmmm...[/s] So it looks like Freeola outgoing email via HTC Wildfire and the original posters Nokia 5800 are currently both incompatible.
It will be interesting to hear from other Freeola smart phone users.
Evening Hmmm, seems like you've been having an 'interesting' day :¬(
I can confirm that everything you tried for the HTC also failed on my Galaxy S, also running Froyo 2.2 :¬( I gave up in the end.
A couple of months back, one of my son's tried and failed with his Freeola address on the iPhone 3GS. However my googlemail account does obviously work :¬)
I've just tried Android 2.2 - also fails I'm afraid.
So it looks like Freeola outgoing email via HTC Wildfire and the original posters Nokia 5800 are currently both incompatible (could just be with certain phone providers I guess).

Using smtp.gmail.com with outbound port 587/TLS is the best get-around I can find at the moment.
[s]Hmmm...[/s] Not sure we are able to do anything about port 587, but it's something I can suggest. We are seriously looking into allowing TLS or SSL for an upcoming product, however, due to launch soon-ish.
Those settings don't work for me.
I take it your testers were defo connected via 3G/HSDPA at the time?
My daughter has Android Froyo 2.2 so I can setup a test account using that.
I've spent hours on this - all very frustrating!
I've read that 'smart phones' seem to like port 587 and TLS - is this something you guys can look at?
I've just read a story where another well known ISP made port 587/TLS available on request - again is this possible?
[s]Hmmm...[/s] This 'None' setting should work across whichever mail client you choose to use with the device.
My colleague who tested his account via smtpauth is currently running version 2.2 of the OS (from your posts elsewhere on the subject, you infer you are not) and is not using a Virgin network connection.
Therefore I can only imagine that the issue lies with the service provider or the OS your phone is running. My money is currently on the latter. However, I have passed your specific account details along to them to test on their devices but, to be brutally honest, I suspect the messages will send without a hitch.
I'm afraid I've tried all the security options - 'none' is the only one I believe Freeola support (i.e. not SSL or TLS).
I've just installed a different email Android app K9 - here are some pics of the options available.
Outgoing options are similar to the standard app though:
none/SSL/TLS
'Requires sign-in' with Authentication options of:
plain or cram_md5
I've tried 'none' with login required, and both auth options but it still fails.
