I've finally taken the plunge and bought a shiny new HTC Wildfire running Android!
All's going well but I'm having trouble setting up my Freeola email account. Similar to this previous post I can receive but not send email.
I'm using Freeola's SMTP auth outgoing server address. I think the issue is the HTC email app doesn't have an option for 'requires authentication', but I am using the 'login required' option with my Freeola credentials. This all 'verifies' successfully and allows the account to be setup but when I go to send a real email it fails with 'settings incorrect'.
I've tried port 25 and 2025 - just in case.
I'm with VirginMobile who don't have an outgoing server for non ISP customers to use :¬(
Any idea how I can get this to work?
I have a get-around by using Gmail's outgoing server with port 587 and the TLS security option. This works but isn't completely ideal for me as some email clients will see the 'sent on behalf of...' message along with my Gmail address.
Thanks in advance.
[s]Hmmm...[/s] I'm not familiar with your phone but happy to try and help :¬)
Your Yahoo! email settings will be different from Freeola's.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'notification' though?
What's you current setup - are you forwarding your Freeola email accounts to your Yahoo! one or picking them up directly?
NB. You can pick up your Freeola accounts from any connection but will need 'email Freedom' enabled to be able to send from a non-Freeola connection.
[s]Hmmm...[/s] Im in need of help regarding setting up my Nokia E71 phone so that i can recieve Email notification, my website is hosted by Freeola.
Is it possible, i have yahoo email notification on nokia but is there a difference in email settings.
Thanks
*blush*Anything, just thought I would admit to my cockup and let other Freeola Android users know all is well with Freeola email :¬)
Yipeeee....well done Hmmm, told you it would work :¬D
*blush*Ok - I thought I would just have one more try setting up an email account using the standard HTC Mail app.
Bosh - it worked straight away via 3G and Freeola's SMTauth!
I think I may have have had my account/email address mixed up last week! i.e. correct sr number but for rather than
Really I was just testing to see if Butch's troubleshooting was up to it!
Butch mentioned a typo in my email where I specified accounts - maybe it wasn't a typo after all?
Anyway, just thought I would/should admit to my cockup and let other Freeola Android users know all is well with Freeola email :¬)
[s]Hmmm...[/s]Everything just works :¬)
By default the Android mail app leaves a copy on the server, you can change it if required, but as you say it's a good thing if you're just using your phone as a secondary/backup device.
Looks like I'll be sticking to sending mail via Gmail's servers for now as this SMTP-auth doesn't work for me. At least my emails are going securely by SSL though! Your email can be picked up by dodgy 'sniffers' :¬P
Hopefully Freeola will introduce SSL etc. before too long :¬)
I had one more attempt using Freeola's server this morning - still failed. The account verification goes through fine to it must just be something buggy when a real email sends. The K-9 mail app allows debugging (and all sorts of extras) but you have to install the Android SDK to access the logs - I must do some work today so I'll have to leave that for now ;¬)
[s]Hmmm...[/s]Changing my Tag line to - I just want things to work!

Hi DL,
Thanks for the replies :¬)
You mention "receiving mail" - but can you 'send mail' (via 3G) that's where my problem is?
Morning Hmmm,
No problem doing either via 3G .... sent and received test emails quite a lot last night, 'suppose I was just amazed that it actually worked and how easy it had been set up. Not so in your case though :¬(
One thing that I did notice is that emails received on the phone, the same emails are still received from the server when I check sometime later ie copies, which I suppose is not a bad thing.
...All checked, receiving mail
That's how it went :¬)

Re. Android 2.2
See my earlier comment - I have tried my daughters HTC Wildfire that's running 2.2 which also failed for me.
Re. Virgin forum
Thanks for that as well. I've actually got a couple of posts on the go over there already. I had seen the thread you found and other similar ones. The difference there is the user has a Virgin/NTL email account. This allows him to use Virgin's outgoing SMTP server. Unfortunately you can can't have a Virgin email address (the login would allow me to use their server) if you are only a phone customer - I've asked!
And yes 2.2 has been promised (received for testing last week of Jan) and there's a long running thread for that :¬) But see my 2.2 comments above.

EDIT: Both Vodaphone and TMobile have recently announced (02/02/11) upgrades for Wildfire to android 2.2. HTC have aswell. As Virgin is a 'virtual' network, off the back of TMobile I think, you may get some joy sooner rather than later :¬)
And yes, wireless was off!
I don't have an 'email button' either so I selected an app labeled 'email' within my apps. It opened and ran a 'wizard' rather like setting up an email account in OExp or WMail.
email address
email address password
select pop3
freeola pop3 address
email address username - sr1234....-00*
same password (but already completed)
port 110 (already completed)
Checks settings, then asks for
SMTP auth address
port 587 (changed to 25)
security none
require sign-in (already completed)
email address username - sr1234....-00*
same password
All checked, receiving mail
That's how it went :¬)
