It takes a elephant trainer 40 minutes to wash an elephant and it takes his assistant 2 hours to wash an elephant.
How long does it take them both to wash 3 elephants when they work togther ?

Trainer has done 2 in 80 mins. Assistant has then done 2/3 of the last elephant. There is now 1/3 left. so...
40 - (40 / 3) = 26 mins 40 sec.
So the total time would then be; 80mins + 26mins 40secs.
That gives us; 106mins 40 ses. I think this could be right.

120 + 40 + 80 = 240 mins.

or

I think somebody already said 3 hours, so I'm guessing at the top answer. If it's correct, I'll say my method of working.

Are we to assume that all the elephants are the same size, and the figures given are from tests on elephants the same size?

Are the elephants working together as a team? If they are then the time would be shorter. Possibly just 40 mins.

If you take the fact that it takes the assistant 6hrs and the other guy 2hrs for them each to wash an elephant then, 8hrs divided by 3 then it's 80 mins or 1hr 20 mins. I think I'm repeating what somebody has already said, possibly somthing I said.
