They are using some law made for a small company. Basically section 188 is there if your business is going under and you need to change contracts in your work force to stay afloat. It means you offer them the chance to sign a new contract and if they refuse you say you are giving them notice that if they don't you will sack them to keep your company going.
The brigade are using this to try and make us work 12 hour days...factor in that most firemen live at least an hour away from where they work... when are we going to see our families?
OK the using of the law in that way isn't terribly ethical but here's the thing, they're under a budget. This isn't a situation where the service is bringing in money so they can stretch and it's not a situation where they can afford to go out of business. It is how it is and while it's not terribly fair, it is logical when the service has to be the priority at all times.
Now, as someone who has worked 12 hour shifts in a couple of jobs and then had to travel well over an hour to get home, yes it truly sucks but you either get on with it or you find a new job. That is the sucky reality and I can't really sympathise with unions who still think we're in some financial golden age.
I'm not going to be taking the side of politicians or union leaders, they're all a bunch of self-serving bassss..
Haven't been on here for so long...

The strike organised for bonfire night was totally irresponsible and whoever suggested it should be sacked. /i]
Also, when you wrote this, do you have any idea why we are striking?

It's not that. It's that you guys are striking at a time when the general public has absolutely no sympathy for strikers and for that you can blame Bob Crow.
In the view of the public, you guys are just another union holding the country to ransom. The strike organised for bonfire night was totally irresponsible and whoever suggested it should be sacked. Instead of trying to make a point by risking peoples lives, maybe your union should focus on actually getting their point across.[/i]
That strike was never going to go ahead. And as a fire man I want no strikes. To be honest, the main cause of strike is a man called Brian Coleman. He is a member of local council and up for a fight against the FBU (which he admits).
As for saying it "irrisponsible" to strike on bonfire night, the brigade and Coleman said they had provided cover, which they have paid 12 million pounds for in case we do strike... the cover the offered was awful and that is one of the reasons the strike was called off. The union are putting over their point by saying we are needed. When would Santa go on strike? I say again that I do not like strike action, but the fact is Coleman is a power mad person who wants to break the union and doesn't care who it effects. Fire staff or the public.

Though admittedly my understanding of employment law is questionable. At best.
Yeah that sounds like Bantha poodoo. I can't understand how they can get away with it, that's the thing.
I don't have much of a choice about signing. But it is just so frustrating how the brigade are bullying us into things. It is beyond a joke what they are doing to people now. And the media has no idea.
