If you keep playing, and when your character is quite strong, join the assassin's guild - the "Marog Tong" - their hideout is found in Vivec.
Also, a khajiit called "Ahnassi" in the tavern in Peligiad has some interesting independent quests.

I really haven't got anywhere at all. I've been playing it for a total of about 3-4 hours. I've joined the fighters and mages guild. As I didn't fancy picking mushrooms, I went to kill some rats, and got killed immediately (which is strange as the ones I come across in the wilderness I can kill quite easily). so I've spent the remainder of the time travelling from town to town stealing stuff and selling it, then buying better armour and weapons.
I've been back to kill the rats but am still no match for the two upstairs (how pathetic).

The only thing I did in the game that actually had some meaning was break into someones house and steal their bottles and stuff. I then sold them at the shop thingy and ummmmm........that was it.
after getting seriously bored with rats killing me, I sacked off the fighters guild missions and went for a walk. On my way I found some idiot who fell out of the sky, so I nicked his 'lightning sword' or whatever it is. then i purchased some crappy light armour and a shield, and I look half way respectable.
I believe I'll stick to stealing gold our of crates and things, buying better weapons, and selling stuff until I feel I am strong enough to kill things.
I'm still at that 'unsure' stage about the game. I can feel its potential, I just haven't had an occasion in it yet where I've thought 'this is great'.
