Hello, Monkey Man here. I've been working for some time on creating a 3D engine for use in a web page. I'm using Javascript to manipulate layers, or divs on the page. I've managed to make things like sin waves before and things that can come closer and further away, but I'd really like to make something that is true 3D. The way I see it is that I would have to move each pixel in relation to each other for it's x,y and z axis. The basic model I want to make is a cube that can be travelled around in any direction. Does anyone know how the professionals would do it? Do they draw 360x360 views of each graphic and then scale it, or do they do as I suggested above and move each individual pixel? I'm doing Maths and Physics at Uni at the moment, so I've got no trouble understanding any ideas that anyone could throw at me. Cheers for reading.

I really think JavaScript is the wrong route.

Also... why? What's the point? As Tyla said, Director would be much easier, faster and smaller.

Yeah, that's about the shape of it. There's got to be a solution using maths and stuff, but I'm not out to prove anything - I'm sure someone's thought about this before. I don't think I could produce anything in Javascript that would match the speed of that Anfy3D software, but I'll do my darndest.

My pleasure, if you do get a javascript 3d rendering engine, be sure to copywrite if first before letting anyone else see it!!! And good luck, you are a brave man..

Hmmmm, wasn't that "Snarf" who used to just say "snarrrrrfff" at everything?

Oh, it was before it's time I think... Too slow on a 9,600 modem eh?

Yeh, I've used Swift before, it is good, not used Director though, I always hear good things about it... Atmosphere eh, another web technology I need to get in to, trouble is, I'm labelled as a developer, and we only get to play with code, and the site I work with doesn't really use that stuff anyway...

I think in terms of Monkey Man proving that he is good at Maths and Physics he might need to program something rather than doing it in something like 3ds Max or Director, at least, that is the impression I got from his post.

Cheers FG! I'm downloading it now, it's only a 2mb file. That animation of the spaceship loaded up really quickly as well. I'm still going to find a way to do it using javascript though, even if I have to move each pixel individually. Nice one!

It died!! Thank God!!

Swift 3D allows you to generate true 3D and exprt using Flash, Director allows you to use te New 3D export to Flash using 3DWF format... Both highly optimised for the Web and streams very well... Have a look at Atmosphere by Adobe too, currently free on Beta from Adobe!!

A great demo of a spaceship on the page above and the web site says....

"Anfy 3D is the fastest interactive 3d renderer with shading available, using Java™ technology today.
It is both available as shareware program for web masters, and as Anfy3dAPI library for Java(tm) programmers.
You can create your own animations importing from VRML, or using the Anfy 3D Editor, which include Undo/Redo and boolean operations."

Is VRML still a standard or did it die a horrible death??? That might be a place to start. Failing that, I would be amazed if you did a true 3D engine, in a web page using Javascript alone, the pros do use 3D Studio Max for animation, and Director, though Director is more "optimised" for web stuff... and cheaper then 3DS Max!

However, as you are familiar with Javascript, you might be able to move to true Java and write some code to do 3D, I have seen this done on the web, damned if I can remember where though.

3D studio Max. It's a nightmare to learn, but it's excellent.

3D? mmmm... Personally I'd use Director (latest edition) or Swift 3D for Flash and create 3D that way...

Otherwise...

Dunno!
