What cars have you got? What cars did you start with? How do you find them?
I am just going to learn to drive and had wanted a mini since i was about 8! But i think it may be expensive for my first car. How many of you smashed up your first car?

I've yet to learn to drive actually. My brothers can drive, unfortunately they've both had their crashes. Sadly my older brother lost his fiancee in one, she was 22.
I might start taking lessons later this year if I can. I'm sure I'll be a careful driver and I'll avoid buying cheap cars because my younger brother is on his 4th car. One he crashed because the breaks failed.
After you pass your test, can you do further training that would help reduce your insurance? God I had no idea how expensive it could be. I heard theirs a scheme where you pay insurance when you use your car. So obviously it'll cost more if you're out every night.

Started with a little Morris Traveller (the ones with the wooden back). Very reliable, but also very basic.
Had many cars since then, but current one is a Seat Altea, pretty spacious for the kids and us, but still packs a fair punch with the foot down. Has the full sport kit and alloys etc as well, oh and built in Bluetooth, heated seats etc...

If you want excitement, go for a Ford Capri 2800i - flooring the accelerator in one of these is literally like firing a bullet with you sitting inside it, unless it's raining in which case from a standing start your back wheels will spin and keep spinning until you ease off.
If you want sheer quality go for a BMW 325i M3 - handles like a Ford Capri but doesn't rattle so much or smell of oil so badly and you get to fiddle around with the onboard computer above the rearview mirror.
If time flies by and you wonder where the hell your life went, get a C3, it can do 0-30 in 6.8 seconds, which is great for me as that gets me from my house to my therapist who lives 10 doors down.
In over 20 years of driving I've never, ever had an accident. But loads of near misses that could have turned out catastrophic, like when I was doing 140mph up the M6 - the bushes went on the nearside front wheel resulting in the wheel demolishing the wheel strut, slamming into the wheel arch and spinning my Capri around so many times I lost count, I was just lucky nothing else was about and I ended up facing the right way on the hard shoulder. Or the time I was driving my BMW down the M23 at 2am and thought 'Hmm, lets see what she can do..." so opened her up to 135mph and learned more than I wanted to about braking distances when I went around a slight bend and nearly ran into the back of 3 vans playing silly games across all 3 lanes.

There are some tricks you can use to get insurance down, getting your Advanced Drivers Test is one of them but not all insurers give discounts for it.
The major trick is to get yourself put down as a named driver on someone else's car insurance. As long as you're not the main driver, i.e. the one using that vehicle the most, then the heavy loading for your age and inexperience gets offset by the main insured's no claims bonus. So if you get a car of your own, get your dad or mum to register the vehicle in their name and to insure it in their name with you as a named driver, just don't let on that you'll be the one using it all the time.
A lot of companies (e.g. Direct Line) will allow you to accrue no claims discount of your own this way, so even though you're not the main insured and have just been a named driver for 5 years, you'll still get max no claims bonus if you then take out a policy of your own with them after that period.
Good luck with your driving test, I look forward to a higher risk of skin cancer once you get out and about contributing more greenhouse gases to help accelerate our climate change.

My dad just finished ordering the Reno Kangoo like Tim's. Im getting on the insurance on that, dont know what to expect, looks a bit bulky in comparason to a saxo :)

I'm yet even learn to drive myself, basically due to the cost and me being a bit lazy. Ideal first car? (Old style) Mini convertible. Classic car, I'd assume low insurance and of course the chance to drive around without a roof in the summer. I would say a Mini Moke, but that might be a bit impractical for the UK!
And it would not make me look gay, as I've been told. At least I hope not.
