Yesterday was the last day of school for me, the defining moment of freedom. And I nearly died.

We finished school early and all the year elevens were going down to the park. The big gate at the back of school was locked and I decided to clinb it. However the gate has large metal spikes on top of it to prevent intruders getting in and as I jumped over to the other side of the gate I snagged my trousers on the spikes and fell seven feet to the floor and landed on my head. I got straight back up, doctors told me because of the adrenaline. I stood there, not knowing what to do and I realised blood was pouring from a gash above me eye.

I took off my shirt (the one al my mates has signed) to push against the cut and try and stop the bleeding. One of my mates ran to get a teacher to unlock the gate and get help for me. I was escorted to the school medical room by four members of staff who presumed I was drunk (I was stone cold sober). My dad was called and we rushed to the LGI (Leeds General Infirmary) in a taxi.

We got there and I had to tell the doctor what day of the week etc. it was to see if I was concussed/brain damaged by the fall. I knew what the answers to the questions but my words came out as distorted sounds. I sat for a few hours in a wheelchair propperd up against my dad, who kept telling me not to fall asleep. I was in a wheelchair because I couldn't walk because I was 'in shock'.

I finially saw the staff doctor and she said because of the nature of the accident I needed to have my head x-rayed to see if my skull was cracked. Luckily it was all ok but after the x-rays I threw up blood, which isn't the healthiest of things to do. I waited another hour or so, in which the shock wore off and I could walk again, and the nurses decided my cut couldn't be glued - it would have to be steri-stripped together.

The let me home because I could walk and because I objected to spending the night in a hospital bed (I have done it before and it is terrible). I went home and slept loads and this morning I have a black eyes and my whole left side of my face is bruised and swolen. My left arm is bruised where I probably landed on it and my knee is torn open too.

Last night was my high school prom and I couldn't go, something which is sort of upsetting me. But the fact that the doctors told me I could easily have died yesterday is something I will hold dear and something that will make me think more carefully about doing stupid dangerous things in the future. I know the fact I missed the prom, have a black eye, I can't shower because the steri-strips can't get wet for 5 days and it hurts to move my left arm are all bad, but I remain with my life and it takes something like this to make you realise how precious life is.

I was always one of those people who said, "It'll never happen to me", now I am less naive. Life can be taken away in an instant because of something stupid, and I was lucky to escape relatively unharmed.

If you weren't able to unravvel the moral from my story, it is this. "Think twice before you do something dangerous, and remember, never tell yourself it 'wont happen to you' it could"

YOu can apply to get extra time or 'consideration' for what happened. If you go to the hospital or your doctor to write a letter saying how this could effect your revision/exam grade but call your school for details.

This morning I feel better but look worse. My face is much more swolen that yesterday and my eyeball is bleeding. I think in the fall I burst a blood vessel or something and my eye is bleeding intentally, which looks pretty horrific and is very scary.

I am meant to be revising today but seriously don't know if I am up to it.

i consider myself lucky, I've never broken a bone.

I've lacerated my foot severing a load of nerves, and got a 2 inch gash in my back, but thats it.

i did once slip while mincing about on asda roof and bashed my head on a rivet. Had terrible nausea and headache next day, which I assume was concussion, and blood all down my shirt. thats the only head injury

I forgot to mention that actually, my hands kept going numb and I lost all feeling in them at one time. Least of my worries though.

My first instinct was to laugh, until I heard "Kyle, your bleeding!" then I panicked

It was like when you vomit and only the stomach juices come out, only with blood. It is really manky and not like in the movies. It is because my body was trying to empty or something and only blood was left so I was wretching it up. Not nice, but it is tasteless.

He is fine, he texted me last night and he is on msn now.

Pretty embarassing.

Just think. You'll be remembered not as the lovable cat lover that you are, but as 'the gimp who stacked on the gate'
