Yesterday was the last day of school for me, the defining moment of freedom. And I nearly died.

We finished school early and all the year elevens were going down to the park. The big gate at the back of school was locked and I decided to clinb it. However the gate has large metal spikes on top of it to prevent intruders getting in and as I jumped over to the other side of the gate I snagged my trousers on the spikes and fell seven feet to the floor and landed on my head. I got straight back up, doctors told me because of the adrenaline. I stood there, not knowing what to do and I realised blood was pouring from a gash above me eye.

I took off my shirt (the one al my mates has signed) to push against the cut and try and stop the bleeding. One of my mates ran to get a teacher to unlock the gate and get help for me. I was escorted to the school medical room by four members of staff who presumed I was drunk (I was stone cold sober). My dad was called and we rushed to the LGI (Leeds General Infirmary) in a taxi.

We got there and I had to tell the doctor what day of the week etc. it was to see if I was concussed/brain damaged by the fall. I knew what the answers to the questions but my words came out as distorted sounds. I sat for a few hours in a wheelchair propperd up against my dad, who kept telling me not to fall asleep. I was in a wheelchair because I couldn't walk because I was 'in shock'.

I finially saw the staff doctor and she said because of the nature of the accident I needed to have my head x-rayed to see if my skull was cracked. Luckily it was all ok but after the x-rays I threw up blood, which isn't the healthiest of things to do. I waited another hour or so, in which the shock wore off and I could walk again, and the nurses decided my cut couldn't be glued - it would have to be steri-stripped together.

The let me home because I could walk and because I objected to spending the night in a hospital bed (I have done it before and it is terrible). I went home and slept loads and this morning I have a black eyes and my whole left side of my face is bruised and swolen. My left arm is bruised where I probably landed on it and my knee is torn open too.

Last night was my high school prom and I couldn't go, something which is sort of upsetting me. But the fact that the doctors told me I could easily have died yesterday is something I will hold dear and something that will make me think more carefully about doing stupid dangerous things in the future. I know the fact I missed the prom, have a black eye, I can't shower because the steri-strips can't get wet for 5 days and it hurts to move my left arm are all bad, but I remain with my life and it takes something like this to make you realise how precious life is.

I was always one of those people who said, "It'll never happen to me", now I am less naive. Life can be taken away in an instant because of something stupid, and I was lucky to escape relatively unharmed.

If you weren't able to unravvel the moral from my story, it is this. "Think twice before you do something dangerous, and remember, never tell yourself it 'wont happen to you' it could"

Yeah but it is still sort of "wow I am alive". I guess I dont jump for joy each time I sucessfully cross a road without being hit by an 18 wheeler but this is something that will stick with me for a long time.

And just the one 'z' on my name dude

I suppose everybody would do the same. It's like after you just, and I mean *just* avoid seriously hurting yourself, like the amount of times I've slipped off my ladder and been about to fall about 8 feet onto a large glass and metal desk before gripping something to stop myself as I fall backwards. I would just stand on the ladder, holding on for a few seconds before snapping out of it. You play through in your mind again and again what could've happened, and can forget that it DIDN'T happen. You were lucky, Kyzz, think about the fact that you're okay, not the fact that you nearly died.

Hmm, worst injuries I've had are black eyes... Never broken or sprained anything, but then I never really played sports, and I was never stupid enough to fall off a wall (everybody I knew who'd broken an arm or leg did so falling off a wall, seriously)

But back in 6th form I was always, ALWAYS in pain. Going boxing 3 times a week meant I was constantly pulling muscles and damaging my arms and hands. I couldn't hold a pen sometimes. I've always hated long lasted, nagging injuries over something which hurts loads for a while but then wares off.

Anyway, Kyzz, you were lucky. You could be in a wheelchair, dribbling down your front and never be able to walk/talk/go out/play sports/have fun ever again. Think about it. Oh, wait, you already have. That's the point of the post. Well, think about it some more.

I'm quite accident prone also (ANd seem to hurt myself randomly) like when I nearly broke my toes when I kicked a wall, or when I was left dangling 20 feet above the ground with only one guy holding my legs from above, that was the most frightening experience of my life, we were carring on,and he pushed me, I fell over the side of the bridge and he grsbbed my legs just in time.

I managed to pull myself up, fortunately. Haven't been to that bridge in a while either.

Heh, painful.

But heh, I could reel off about 10 times where I could of died or been like paralised.

Fell off tree onto back - 10ft
Fell off bike and got reversed onto by car - Grazed knee and head
Fell off bike and completely wrecked my knee - Cut right down to the fat/bone/nerves
Cut my neck via glass - 1.5cm from windpipe. Could of been nasty.

Lol but Im still here, obviously wern't my time to go.

But its sorry to hear mate.. get well soon.

I don't plan on fainting, but I should be alright by then. My concern is that my eye will be still swolen and it will impair my reading in the exam.

some boards are mor leniant that others, I think AQA wont allow consideration if you faint/pass out in an exam.

If on the actual day my eye is messed up and I can't see well enough to write or something then I will apply for special consideration and retake the exam. My first exam is on Wednesday, the swelling should have gone down by then and fingers crossed I should be ok to take the exam. The next exam after that it over a week later, and I should certainly be ok for that and all of the following exams.

How long will it be before my eye stops bleeding, it is scaring the hell out of me.
