I read Digitiser today.

Its always a bad idea.

Don`t know why I bothered.

It talked about a vote held by CVG, that asked "people" what their favourite games were. They then compiled a "Top 100" list. Something like 7 of the top 10 were N64 titles. Including the top 2 I believe.

So, the deduction is that the N64 titles are the best... Nintendo rule, Sony are rubbish, only for casual gamers... etc....

Erm? There are many flaws to this. First of all:

No matter what people say, it has to be admitted that the range of choice on N64 is a little... limited. There may be good games, but they are released once every decade or two. This means that if you ask an N64 fan what their favourite game is, its quite likely to be one of those select few, which will add greatly to the votes received by those games.

You take an owner of a Sony console, and whilst it may *possibly* be argued that there aren`t as many gold platinum, medal winning, award achieving, ground breaking, mind numbingly excellent titles, there are loads and loads of good games. People are given such a huge choice that they won`t all agree on what`s best. Some will vote for this... some will vote for that... and others will vote for something else entirely different - not just platformers and a couple of FPSs. That cuts the vote count for all Sony games straight away.

The second point is equally important, though I`m sure there will be many of you who are exceptions:

The most likely people to have voted in this survey (though I don`t know for sure) are the readers of CVG. This as far as I know is a multi format magazine, so in theory it should have a fairly even spread of various console owners - wrong, and majorly so.

At present, the most recent console released is the PS2 (in the UK). As a result, if you walk into a Magazine store, you are confronted by mostly PS2/PS magazines, and a handful of PC mags. After careful hunting, you may find multi-format mags, and occasional DC/N64 mags. My point is that if you have a PS, then you`re very likely to buy PS mags, and no multi-format mags such as CVG. If you have an N64, it may be more sensible to buy multi-format, as you may be undecided what console to move onto. Do you switch to Sony, or march with Microsoft? It could make you go for mags such as CVG. Therefore - the mag readers are biased in the favour of Nintendo/Sega.

As a result - don`t believe those figures, or that survey. Whilst I know some of you may be exceptions to what I`ve said above, it is true for many other people.

Statistics are so hard to trust these days, unless you know everything there is to know about your sample.

Yes, but as I said, I looked at the N64 titles the other day and to be honest I didn't like many of the games at all-they're just not my cup of tea. So it's quality for some, and not for others.

And I also feel they could've worked harder on the N64. I mean, what was the last really good game that came out for it? No wonder Nintys are getting PS2 games, the GC was over a year away when Nintendo seemingly gave up on it.

ssxpro, You speak a load of nonsense. CVG magazine's chart was fair and 'Right', not only that but you more or less said: 'it's only bought by non-PS Gamer's as they only buy PS mags'. Dont be silly.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the majority of PS/PS2 Gamer's adults?? Therefore they could afford more than one magazine.
Per month, I would buy at-least 6 different mags.

And, the CVG magazine poll wasn't the only one with the same results. Various others such as 'Electronic Gamer's Monthly' and others across the Net including 'IGN' at one stage had more or less the same results. So It's not sectioned to one particular magazine.
So get over it,accept the truth, the results are true and fair. Certainly 9 games in the CVG top 10 were ones I voted for.

Digitiser are laughable, They were going on and on about how fantastic the gaming world would be if it was run by Nintendo and how rareware acually care instead of making a profit, haha £35 for a updated nes game doesn't sound like caring to me.

It must really worry you, eh?! Do you get any sleep after reading things like that? ;-)

What I'm trying to say is that it's not really important if one magazine gives 7 N64 games top marks and only 3 PSX games appear in the top 10. It's the readers poll, does exactly what it says on the box. How will it affect the rest of the world and the gamesplaying public? Not at all. Will everyone flock to the games shop to buy an N64? Nope.

It's horses for courses again, isn't it?! Ant, you're happy with Spyro, that's fine. I can't stand the game really, although I've not played the sequels and they may well be better. I've played mario 64 and liked it. I can't say it's my favorite game, but my wife loves it (and Shenmue too) There IS enough room in the world for more than one console and more than one platform game too, so chill. It would be a boring place if all we had were clones of one console or one game type, wouldn't it?!

N64 owners are attached to their consoles because there are some fine games out for it, similarly, PSX and PS2 owners are pretty impressed with their console and there are indeed some very nice games out for both. I'm lucky in the fact that I own an N64 and a PS2, and both are pretty important to me. I love the games on both machines, and wouldn't be happy with just one. I also have a Dreamcast and think that the games on that are excellent too. Which one is the best? None. Personally, I couldn't live without any of my consoles (well, an exaggeration, maybe, but I'd find it hard to get rid of any of them)

SO one magazine prints a top 100 games and a certain console has more at the top, whoopee-do! It means nothing, other than more readers perhaps have N64s or simply like these games more, it's not representative of the rest of the world or you as an individual, so relax.

i used to get CVG but then they went a bit over the top with the pokemon thing doing about 20 pages for pokemon yellow a while back made me stop buying it.
i also had an N64 but i sold it to electronics boutique for £86 in vouchers but the funny thing is i still aint sold the console or games so i have a N64 with no games.
Dont play on it though because i have a PS2 and got GTA3 last friday and that changed tiltawhirls mind on the PS2 i think he is getting one now.

Lol, I thought Spyro was great, and it got top marks from many magazines...I think even GameSpot gave it a good mark. Perhaps some people prefer dragons to plumbers?

If you could, can you explain why Spyro was supposedly a rip-off?? It was a long game, with some great graphics and nice gameplay ideas. It gave you the ability to go wherever you wanted to (most of the time,) and was also quite addictive. Yes, it was a bit easy at first, but was much harder as you neared the end.
