"May 29, 2003 - In Take-Two Interactive's conference call with analysts early this week the company said that its exclusivity contract with Sony Computer Entertainment America has been amended and, additionally, executives strongly hinted that a version of Grand Theft Auto may come to Xbox.
During the Q&A section of the conference call, Take-Two's Jeffrey Lapin stated that an unannounced SKU would appear on Xbox in the fourth quarter of the company's fiscal year (which, for Rockstar, is November to January). Lapin didn't confirm it was Grand Theft Auto, but he implied, according to a source who listened in on the call, that it was a Grand Theft Auto title. If rumor proves true, then a previously published version of the game, i.e. Grand Theft Auto III or Grand Theft Auto Vice City, is in the works for Xbox.
According to the conference transcript, the relevant question asked in the call was: "Is GTA for Xbox coming, and when it is coming?" Lapin's answer was: "We said that there will be an Xbox SKU from Rockstar in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2004 [Nov. to Jan.], but we're not going to comment on what it is at this point."
It is assumed by analysts that the Xbox title Lapin refers to isn't a version of Mafia or Max Payne 2, two potential games that have already been announced or hinted at.
SCEA's contract with Rockstar originally stated that all Grand Theft Auto titles would be exclusive to PlayStation 2 (with the exception of the PC) from 2001 to year's end 2004. Apparently, SCEA and Rockstar have re-negotiated the contract to permit the game to appear on other consoles. Rockstar is currently working on the next Grand Theft Auto title, due for year's end in 2004, which will, as we understand it, complete the original exclusivity contract with SCEA. (Unless that too has been renegotiated.)
A second question was asked: "Will the Sony deal allow you to ship a non-PS2 GTA product even if it's not the most current?" The answer was: "We're not going to comment on terms of the at deal although by the next conference call we'll be able to give some more color."
Take-Two is most likely to announce the full, confirmed news in its next analyst call this August. And you know we'll have more on that when it comes."

I thought the first one was pants but that's just me.
Word has it that even Devil May Cry addicts thought the 2nd game sucked donkey balls.
Tell me Mr Alastair, have you got the research facilty type area on Phenandra yet, where you meet the Space Pirates properly for the first time and get the heat visor?
That's gotta be one of the most stunning game play moments i've ever bared witness too. Fighting the space pirates in the dark with the heat sensor up, dodging Metroids at the same time. Then after a long journey through what seems like endless space pirate infested labs you come out on THE most beautiful under water sections i've ever seen.
Absoloutly gaming amazement.
> Why Capcom? Why won't you bring Devil May Cry to the GC or Xbox?!
CAPCOM announced a game titled Project Devil as a GameCube exclusive some months ago now. It was said to use the same engine as Devil May Cry - but the game would take place in a paralell universe with different characters, storylines and locations.
Unfortunately, there's been no recent word on it so it may well have been canned :(.
> Please let an xbox version be true: good controller
You really think it'd work better with an Xbox pad? It was MADE for the PS2 one - the car handling works perfectly with the D-Pad and the button layout is almost perfect. Trust me; whatever improvements, it'll be worse in the control section.
Officialy there is no reason to buy a PS2 if this turns out true. I;ll admit im not "crazy" about GTA, but it is loads of fun and its the onl game I played when i had a lend of my mates PS2. I thought it could be so much better(visuals, using own music, multiplayer etc) and no this is possible on this new version on Xbox.
Please let it be true. GTA could be what it always should have been.
> Halo does absoloutly nothing new, just does it in a very accomplished

Yep you are right! Why spoil a good formula?
>Its dull. There is absoloutely no excitment, as you get an >effective 'save' every 5 minutes,
No excitment?! When the Flood first appear? The Maw? Come on man thats a pathetic attempt to dig Halo, orignal? No! Exciting? Yes.
If you had played the game on Legendary you would understand why you need to Save often.
> the combat has an oddly sedated feel

Yep I agree. Should all be sorted in Halo 2. Didn't really bother me but others complain. I would have liked to see more variation with the in-door sections.
>Even when the flood come, you only get a tinge of fear. I just had >absoloutely not attachment to the thing. And no I don't have a 5.1 >sourround set up.
When you first play through and The Flood come you don't know what to expect. Honestly, if you had a 5.1 setup you would feel the tension. Little trickling effects on the rear speakers, water dripping and then you hear the Flood scurrying on the floor and moving in the vents. Don't knock it until you have heard it, its an experience in itself.
>I think a game should be immersive for what it is, not for what you put
>into it. Although I accept it may be better with that st up in place.
I wish I could invite you over to see how good the 5.1 actually is. Stunning is the only word which springs to mind, everything else just doesn't do it justice.
> Metroid on the other hand, while not perhaps as 'stunning' as Halos
> outdoor environments, appeals to me because it doesn't try. Its
> immersive, because it makes you the only person there.
I felt very alone when escaping from the Flood and when you go through the Mundane Library level (yes it is a poor excuse for a level) you really wish you had support because at first you don't know what to expect.
>It brings a classic 2-D exploration game into the 3D world *perfectly*.
I have a GBA Emulator and I only played the first few minutes of Metroid Fusion and it did a good job of it from what I saw. You couldn't be completley sure though because they are totally different perspectives.
>In that it accomplishes more than Halo ever did in terms of evolution of >a genre (which is different to Halo, in its emphasis on exploration).
Halo never wanted to evolutionise the FPS genre, instead it wantewd to be the most polished and exciting FPS game yet and it succeeds by quite an impressive margin. I like to think of it as a Half Life 1.5 and when Half Life 2 is released Halo 2 will be a Half Life 2.5 :)
>It looks great (as does Halo), and the throw away detail is incredible. >Every single section looks different, from the crumbling walls in each
>different Chozo tunnel to the expanses of Phendrana.
Metroid does look very impressive in places but in others it just looks 'good'. When you step out of water it drips down the visor and the steam shows up as condensation, fantastic addition to the game. I agree with the area variation as well. When I went down into the Mines it felt like a totally different game. When you imerge from the lift in the Phendrana Drifts (sp?) area and you see the snow you feel like you have just put in a different game. Metroid Prime does a fantastic job in this area of the game.
>Unlike some gamesabout... It has no loading times, and manages to keep a >huge game world vibrant and alive with an absoloutely incredible array of >creatures.
Halo also had very little loading times. Just think about how big those outside areas are and it only takes a split second for a checkpoint to appear and then disappear. I don't think you can really say the loading times are better in Metroid because the areas vary in size too often.
>While the combat is perhaps less of a challeng than Halo, and therefore >less 'exciting' in terms of big bangs and laser things, its still >perfectly done.
If the combat is perfectly done in Metroid but its less exciting than Halo then surely that is a compliment ;) That means Halo isn't all that boring :)
I am getting a bit tired of the lock on system in Metroid. However the way the controls are mapped out it would be nearly impossible without a lock on system, especially on some of the bosses.
>I accept that the bugs earlier on are pi*s easy, but later on in the >Phazon Mines etc, the hidden depth of Samus's tools are brought out - the >varying weaponry, the dodges you can do. Etc etc.
I agree, the bugs are VERY annoying early on as there is no challenge at all. Later on they do get HARDER but I wouldn't go as far to say as they are hard (non sexual reference ;). The only bit of Metroid I have actually found difficult is the Boss in Phendrana Drifts where you get to pick up the beam upgrade. Can't remember the name but it took me a couple of attempts to defeat.
>I could go on ad nauseum........... but I won't. And it sets your pulse >pounding (occasionaly, but more so on Hard mode) because you feel unsafe ->because you aren't saved every 5 minutes! RAR!
I will see how it pans out towards the end but I will probably go through it on Hard mode just for the sake of it. So far it hasn't challenged me as much as I would have liked. Once you have scanned everything on Normal does that mean it is already scanned in for when you play on Hard mode? I hope so because the scanning is just plain annoying in some areas. At the start of the game I seemed to be scanning every little texture on the screen :)
> Woo. I never do that, except when I do. Hehe. Anyhoo, I know you think
> Halo is the best thing ever etc etc. I just much prefer Metroid.
I respect that fact as well :) However I don't dislike Metroid as much as you dislike Halo.
> And the musics better too. Especially Phendrana.
Heh! You might not like the rest of Halo but the music is unbeatable. I am sorry but the music in Halo beats the music in Metroid with an Andrew Loyd Webber Composing stick ;)
> :P
:P
Metroid Prime is good, but it didn't make me want to play through again and again. One thing I don't like to do is scan everything before getting to kill everything. But of course if you want the decent ending then you have to do the scans which becomes annoying and interupts the action.
Overall Halo kicks MP's teeth in and no amount of whinging by that smelly sod Cyclone is gonna change my opinion. ;-)

Hmm. Maybe. If it was fun.

Mwwhwhahahahahaaaaaa!
