I think that was to make her loss feel greater than if she had just been wearing regular kit. Of course once players knew she was going to die on a second playthru they saved beforehand and de-equipped her before the event, and sure enough the sense of loss isn't quite as great.

I agree that this type of system is one of the best, but it is still nice to be able to customise and make your favourite characters better in certain way like in ffx.
