The characters themselves weren't up to much but the backgrounds of which they were set in were quite amazing for the time.

Yeah and the rendered backgrounds pushed it way out in front of the competition.

Honestly and this is no joke i completed FF9 in 3 months, i loved it to pieces. I thought it was easy. Some tough boss battles but easier than FF8. FF8 has the hardest end battles each enemy has about 150,000 life, i must admit i used a cheat to finish that game...

No graphics were as good as they could have been, no complaints there.
