You really don't get Halo do you?
I was like you when I first started playing it, but the more i've played it the more i've realised what utter genius it is.
Just played the first 3 levels on Heroic and all I can say is WOW! can't wait to do them on Legendary.
No matter what you say Metroid and Deus EX both have average shooting side to the game and in my opinion they aren't FPS games. Deus EX is more of an RPG/Adventure game more than it is a FPS. Its like saying Morrowind is a FPS because it is based in the first person viewpoint. As a FPS Halo is the best ever made in my opinion as it took what Half Life did and made it better in every aspect. Half Life was ground breaking but when you put it up against Halo it looks weak. The beauty of Half Life 2 and Halo 2 being released at the same time is the fact that the two can be compared without any excuses. They are both pure FPS games and both of them will push the genre even further.
My point, generally, is that I think it's unfair that people are heralding Halo 2 as the greatest FPS ever - the real benchmark - while disregarding the likes of Halflife 2; sequels to games that MADE the genre. It's the developers of Halflife, Deus Ex, etc that have the talent - Halo merely took what they did and improved it with the latest technology.
Unfortunately, Halo 2 just seems to be looking like what Halo should've been. Less repetitive, marginally more original (though very sadly, not that much) and much more playable (hopefully, you'll be able to carry more than two guns this time round).
They should arrive tomorow hopefully....

Personnally Halo has done absolutely nothing to me, I didn't have any expirience I hadn't had before; other than being dumbstruck at some of the appauling level designs.
It was fun with some boring parts, but I really struggle to find anything special about it.
I'm pretty certian that Half-Life 2 will wipe the floor with Halo 2 for me.
