19:24 The console war of words upped a couple of notches this week, as top brass from all sides took to the stage to give their own rallying cries at the first Annual ELSPA Games Summit in London.
Microsoft was represented by corporate VP for retail sales and marketing Peter Moore, who gave a keynote address earlier today, outlining Microsoft's longterm direction for Xbox.
And comments made by former Sega of America President Moore to us recently provide a crystal clear account of why the company believes its strategy is the best way forward. Asked if Microsoft was planning its own entry into handheld gaming, following the revelation of the PlayStation Portable at E3, Moore told us: "We're not in that business and there are no plans to be in that business right now."
Explaining this stance, he added: "If I believe, which I do, in the social aspects of gaming, at the furthest end of the gaming spectrum against that is handheld gaming, because that's a very solitary, time-killing activity.
"It's not something you share - we believe that the future is the social element of gaming, and that's going to be done through a console, not through a handheld gaming device."
And on the subject of connectivity, Moore launched into a stinging attack on Nintendo's key E3 focus, stating: "When I was at Sega we did that [GC/GBA connectivity] with Sonic Advance - and the consumer went [shrugs shoulders] big deal! Someone's yet to explain to me the value of hooking up your handheld device to your console."
Seemingly throwing the gauntlet down to his competitors he added: "If somebody can tell me what the value of [connectivity] is, I'm all for it." We're assuming Nintendo might have something to say on that matter...
Microsoft's position is clear: it believes wholeheartedly in the future of gaming as a social activity revolving around the myriad possibilities offered by its hardware and Xbox Live. So don't go holding your breath for that handheld Xbox anytime soon."

The GameCube's doing well - it's making a profit, isn't it? What I was saying was that some people think the GameCube will fail, while Nintendo can easily support it. Oh, and Xbox all the way in Europe and America? Don't think so.

How long will it take people to realise that Nintendo's strong financial position will not sell the hardware ? The average person in Game does not go "Ah, Nintendo have plenty of cash so I'll buy a Gamecube" do they ? Whilst Nintendo do better financially compared to the gaming sections of Microsoft and Sony, the latter two can rely on funds from the rest of the corporation and that gives them the edge, and the Gamecube's worldwide second place is down purely to Japanese sales, because in the USA and Europe it's Xbox all the way and will be for some time.
Note that Nintendo's finances could not save the N64.

Really ? Edge has expressed concern over it, Games TM has, NGC has, NOM has, Dixon's dropped it, Woolworths cut it's selection, numerous developers are abandoning it... If this is not a failing then I dread to think what you envision the failing of the Gamecube would be like ?
The shame is that it's a great console, but Nintendo's not playing by the same rules as the new players, and their rules sell hardware and software.

I'm not saying that. I just pointed out that, while sales have fell below predictions, Nintendo are still in a strong and superior financial situation to Sony and Microsoft. The GameCube is also in a secure second place worldwide, behind the PS2 but ahead of the Xbox.
Thus, all these comments of 'What will save the failing GameCube?' are shallow and foolish.
The messed up thing was that Nintendo still got hundreds of complaints from offended Didn't the ignorant toss-pots see the red "15 and over" sign on the box?
Idiots! Blaming Nintendo for their own ignorance!
Not 100% sure though.
All this "Rare were having a hard ride" nonsense is just garbage though. Rare and Nintendo had a falling out over contracts and other things that we don't and will probably never know about.
Oh and I didn't call you a name, if you read back what i said, I actually said that it would be retarded letting THQ publish Conker : L&U.

Rare were getting a Sh!tty ride from Nintendo near the end of the N64's life. Please give me some links to this info about the Rare employees. Without proof I still agree with Biggles. Also, if true, what percentage of Rare employees were 'gutted'. Some must've relished using the extra bits on the Xbox.

Conker 64. Why's it got a THQ logo on it?
Stop being so quick to call people name otherwise it'll come back to bite you.

Where on earth did you read that THQ will be publishing the next Conker?
If this is true, which I don't think it is for a minute, then that's totally retarded.
