"Connectivity and handheld gaming dismissed as Microsoft corporate VP for retail sales and marketing, Peter Moore, talks tough

19:24 The console war of words upped a couple of notches this week, as top brass from all sides took to the stage to give their own rallying cries at the first Annual ELSPA Games Summit in London.
Microsoft was represented by corporate VP for retail sales and marketing Peter Moore, who gave a keynote address earlier today, outlining Microsoft's longterm direction for Xbox.

And comments made by former Sega of America President Moore to us recently provide a crystal clear account of why the company believes its strategy is the best way forward. Asked if Microsoft was planning its own entry into handheld gaming, following the revelation of the PlayStation Portable at E3, Moore told us: "We're not in that business and there are no plans to be in that business right now."

Explaining this stance, he added: "If I believe, which I do, in the social aspects of gaming, at the furthest end of the gaming spectrum against that is handheld gaming, because that's a very solitary, time-killing activity.

"It's not something you share - we believe that the future is the social element of gaming, and that's going to be done through a console, not through a handheld gaming device."

And on the subject of connectivity, Moore launched into a stinging attack on Nintendo's key E3 focus, stating: "When I was at Sega we did that [GC/GBA connectivity] with Sonic Advance - and the consumer went [shrugs shoulders] big deal! Someone's yet to explain to me the value of hooking up your handheld device to your console."

Seemingly throwing the gauntlet down to his competitors he added: "If somebody can tell me what the value of [connectivity] is, I'm all for it." We're assuming Nintendo might have something to say on that matter...

Microsoft's position is clear: it believes wholeheartedly in the future of gaming as a social activity revolving around the myriad possibilities offered by its hardware and Xbox Live. So don't go holding your breath for that handheld Xbox anytime soon."

The thing about the GC/GBA connecting thing is that no-one really cares about it, Whoop-de-doo you get a few extras in Zelda, its not exactly going to change the way we play games is it?

Yup you did, earlier back you say "The gamecube's doing well, it's making profit isn't it?". My point is that nobody cares about profit, profit generation is not how people decide to buy a console, they buy based on games, marketing and word of mouth, and Nintendo may have a few games but they don't have either of the other two...

Which would be why Sony shifted all their limited edition PS2 consoles within a day, despite them being much more than the normal one, and why people have imported platinum Wavebird controllers, and why the limited edition white GBA SP sold out on preorder in Japan, and why the white Xbox is ultra rare, and why Microsoft have sold a pile of limited edition green Xbox'x....

You're wrong. Whatever you say nobody gives a toss what Nintendo's finances are, that does not drive sales one little tiny bit.

Its not pointless, its innovative and shouldn't be slated as its something that has been tried and attempted. Also, if marketing correctly, people with a GBA will be interested in buying a GameCube.

Back to the topic, GBA- GC connectivity is pointless, no one cares for it and it it's going to do nothing to push sales.

AGH ! This same insistence that retailers, gamers and buyers actually give a toss about Nintendo's finances. The perception is that Gamecube is failing. And yes, over Gamecube it is certainly Xbox all the way. At least MS have the sense not to go for Sony this round...whereas Nintendo don't seem to realise they have competition from the way they act in Europe.

For example, do we get Animal Crossing, a game that has virtually driven Freeloader sales ? Nope.

Do we get the new demo disc ? If we do it'll be so late as to be pointless.

Do we get various new colour peripherals ? Barely.

Do we get stupid delays in release dates ? Yes.

Did we get the Resi demo disc ? Nope.
