I was just seleting my team for a game of Pro Evo earlier today when

BOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!

....well, not quite that dramatic, but almost. Anyway, the screen goes black with jagged white lines running up it. The green light is now flashing green. The blue light isn't on.

I try to turn off the console by pressing the green button. No luck. Can't reset it either. "Main power switch!" I thought, and it worked. The thing went off.

So back on the console goes after a few minutes to cool. Main power switch, standby switch....and it's flashing again. Damn. Turn it off again.

Another few minutes, and I try again. This time while the standby button is on red, I decide to try the disc tray. Whoops, that doesn't work either.

So now I'm stuck with an expensive flashing doorstop. Oh, and it has my game in and won't give it back. I've tried the manual, and that's about as helpful as being spat on. So what the hell is wrong with my PS2?

Any suggestions on a cure? I've given 'em an email to the customer service, although I think I'll have to ring up. They'll pay more attention that way.

Although at the moment I'm still holding out for the "miraculous recovery" option. You never know.

It's the most likely cause based on what you've told us.

More common things that go wrong with PS2s are -

Lenses get mucky and machine stops reading discs.
Power supply blows and machine won't switch on at all.

Yours doesn't fit either of those so it must be a motherboard problem.

I don't think it was really that stupid a place to put it, for the following reasons:

1) It's been sitting there since it was released (what is that....nearly three years?) and I've never had a problem before.

2) The holes in the cable box are mainly situated at the sides - ie designed for things to be stacked on it.

3) I wasn't covering any holes.

4) The event happened at a time when the PS2 had only been on a matter of minutes, and the cable hadn't been on very long - neither were very hot. The cable box was still giving out some heat, as it always does (for no specified reason) but it wasn't exactly the hottest it's ever been.

So it may have been overheating, indeed you might even say it probably was this, but don't you think it strange that it took nigh on three years to happen?

Agreed. And the fact that Blank says the PS2 has always been in the same place suggests that this was a disaster waiting to happen. In fact, I'm surprised it didn't pack up much sooner!

No offence intended, Blank, but they put cooling fans in these things for a reason, and and I'd wager that sitting it on top of something that you knew was hot all the time, wasn't exactly the smartest move you've ever made! :-)

The shop I worked for didn't sell imported goods, so it was definately a UK console.

Edgy, I bet that was a US or Japanese X-box! Too much voltage... kaboom!

Blank, the PS2 motherboard is in the bottom, so if it was sitting on top of a boiling hot cable box then that could easily have fried some components. I don't think the fan could compete with that.

You do realise, unless you have a harddrive and netowrk adapter, there is actually nothing behind there? To see what I mean, take the plastic cover off the back of the PS2 (Just clips off).
