Hello chaps,

I've been using Region X for a while to play Region 4 (Australia, PAL) and Region 1 (USA/Canada, NTSC) discs.

PAL plays fine (Region 2 or 4) but my region 1 discs (NTSC) look rubbish.

I've got a fairly new TV (Ferguson, 28" 4:3, don't know the model number) but I don't think that the playback problem is what I would call and NTSC incompatibility issue.
I believe that NTSC on a non-NTSC tv caused black and white pictures.

I'm getting a low-resolution, over-colourful picture that isn't anywhere near as good as any of the PAL discs (regardless of region).

I've used two different scart inputs and also just the yellow composite input and there is no signal type option on my TV that I can see (other than video/s-video).

I'm using the lead supplied with the console (Red, White, Yellow via the scart adaptor).

So, is anyone clever enough to work out if it is in fact my TV that isn't NTSC compatible or is it something more in depth?

Help!!!

I can improve the picture by tweaking the brightness/colour but I believe that this isn't supposed to be necessary?

It's mainly obvious when text is on screen so that means menus/credits etc...

How about when ur playing dvd region 1 discs reduce the brightness and tune it in just an idea it might just be the NTSC messing up ur tuning seetings because it is at a higher frequency

Wookiee - no worries mate. The cable's good anyway.

Can't work out the TV though. Tested it on my upstairs TV and got Black & White - easy, NOT NTSC compatible but the one downstairs seems to be compatible but I can't believe that the quality should be so poor.

I've got Toy Story (1&2) on Reg 1 and 2, the Reg 2 doesn't have the same bizarre fuzzyness around objects (I notice it mainly on menus - stationary objects etc).

I really can't work it out - the TV obviously can't deal with NTSC properly but doesn't display the trademark 'not compatible' traits.

Oh well...just one of those things.

DAMN IT!!!

The picture is still naff - Games look better, haven't checked out any R2's to see if they look better yet (but they looked great before so that wasn't an issue anyway).

NTSC pictures are too colourful and images are fuzzy (the Toy Story 2 menu shows visible moving fuzzy lines around the characters).

It seems that my TV isn't producing what is commonly found to be an incompatible picture but something is definitely not right.

I don't regret getting the lead - the picture is generally better all round but it hasn't solved the NTSC problem.

Never mind, thanks for all your help guys, guess my Ferguson isn't totally happy with NTSC..... :(

Thought I'd just add my bit in here :)

I've played only about six discs which are NTSC ( Sex And The City and Tenth Kingdom ) and at first I found the colors way too bright and generally hard to watch and the resolution, compared to other discs, poor. (I'm only using the cable supplied in the PS2 box here by the way.)

Anyway, a quick look in the tv instructions book found that for NTSC playback you need to adjust a 'tint' setting, dont ask me what it actually does because I don't have a clue ! I lowered it down and ended up with normal looking colours and the resolution is better - not RGB but same as other DVDs, and my PS2 isnt my main DVD player anyway so I'm not too worried.

My tv is only a Proline one ( dont laugh :( ) so I'd guess this must be a standard feature on most peoples ?

I've now cancelled my order for the blaze rgb scart lead with amazon. Useless lot, been two weeks and still not dispatched.

I'm off to game at lunchtime - it's a few quid more but at least my soul can rest by tonight!!!

You'll be the first to know (after me of course!) if this solves the problem. I'm quite sure it will as everything points to it.

They certainly would have, but to be honest I think that most people 'serious' enough about their DVD to buy R1 discs over their R2 counterparts will probably have a SCART lead anyway, simply because of the improved picture quality.

My dedicated player is a Sony DVP-S725D; this has just about every video and sound output you can think of, and in the manual it states that to view an R0 NTSC disc in colour, you must use a SCART lead and NTSC-compatible TV.

I can't recall if it says anything similar in the PS2 manual, but I'd imagine you'd have found it if it did.

I'm sure, in this context, you're not. As for the rest of your life... ;-p
