This is how ALL 3D textures are done in videogames, a 2D texture map is applied over a 3D shape/bump map.

There's nothing boring about the games either - I assume you have to be a fan of that kind of game to begin with. It's just like Samba de Amigo without the maracas, or Space Channel 5 but you don't need a controller... and the wishi washi game is just unrivalled in any genre! Man that tires you out :-)
