What is spam?

I understood it to be pointless posts. But apparently if a thread goes off on to much of a tangent it is also spam. Can someone give me a clear definition of what it is so I can try to avoid spamming.

spam? well its messages that have been posted just for the sake of posting, without any real thought or meaning whatsoever.

of course, if it contains humourous content, then it is no longer spam.

Well if a topic changes over time that's one thing, but if it degenerates into pointless drivel, or if someone posts a message that bears no relation to any others, then it's another.

I dont consider an off topic message to be spam, since a topic of conversation deviates onto different roads of thought.

Unless it's a message made of body parts, it can't really be arthritic.
