What is spam?

I understood it to be pointless posts. But apparently if a thread goes off on to much of a tangent it is also spam. Can someone give me a clear definition of what it is so I can try to avoid spamming.

Yeah, but that was actually made into a story, whereas the FMV shown in game trailers for use in Cybernet are pointless.
