my friends bought an xbox pack, which included halo, for 220 quid, primarily so he could play HALO, which comes out in PC soon, of which he has a good one (mine's better :D).
he's 17 or 18, can't remember, but he's older than me, but he also says it's good to have a console anyway, because of split screen stuff.

Heh true they say its powered by ATI Radeon and you get 10 fps with a R9800..

I don't think it's stupid at all. PC gaming requires allot of patients which can be a put off for many people, so your friend may not be willing to give up the amount of time it requires to be a hardened PC Gamer.
Plus, by buying an X-Box he also gets to choose from a vast variety of both PC and console games. I have two consoles myself on top of my PC mainly because I can get games on consoles I can't get on the PC, and vice versa.

Maybe he just cannot be bothered with PC Gaming ? Out of 8 games I've had for this new PC 4 have required patching/fiddling with, to run as they should and that required a good few hours looking for solutions, in fact my Angel of Darkness problem was only solved by coming across a post on some obscure american forum.
HALO is great, but i think that he could wait for the improved PC version. besides, to me it didn't looks like the box performed as well as i would have thought. maybe it was due to splitscreen...
