my friends bought an xbox pack, which included halo, for 220 quid, primarily so he could play HALO, which comes out in PC soon, of which he has a good one (mine's better :D).
he's 17 or 18, can't remember, but he's older than me, but he also says it's good to have a console anyway, because of split screen stuff.

the boy has more money than sense, no?

The families of the 230 people killed by dodgy Ford Explorers may take you to task with that one. They were all recalled, sadly too late for many.

However I get your point. PC games are not as stable as they used to be. They are not what I think they should be. But if you can get it to run properly and have a good system then often the PC version is nicer. But it requires a lot of effort. And if there is a console version of a game then I'm more likely to get it, because the hassle isn't quite worth it for me.

Sounds like justification for a new suite!

Well actually, if you really wanted to point figures then I'd guess the testers are maybe the best target. After all, its primarily their job to ensure games stand up to consumer use. And given the scope and complexity of programming these games, its quite unrealistic to expect developers to catch all bugs especially when they've probably spent 18 months staring at it.

Honestly though, I don't necessarily think some developers are doing it per say. To take Vice City on the PC as an example. Thats the 4th version of the game now (including the original GTA3). By now you'd expect that its been refined and perfected so its virtually bug free. The same is true for many other games, its just that there isn't the same visible progression. The vast majority of developers have code libraries and tools/utilities which get reused over many projects and thus get perfected. The biggest example is the licensing of game engines like quake and unreal. Raven Shield is based on unreal technology. But its based upon the latest unreal engine as far as I know which is relatively early into its life cycle and so probably has alot of bugs floating around. Of course when you add in the ATI partnership then I guess things get quite messy. :)
Its a common theme for most buggy games, they have been written from scratch or they are using relatively new technology.

So give the poor developers a break. :)

Alternatively a larger bank balance/credit limit...

Bang on about Vice City though, couldn't believe how good it looked on my PC and how smooth it ran. Bug free might I add, which was my point.

If some developers can do it why not all ?

you CANNOT say that. why do you think HALO is taking longer to come out on PC than it did for Xbox? they COULD be taking advantage of the PC's capabilities, improving it and stabilising it, adding more things, pushing the GPU to the limit and polishing it for final testing, or they could just be waiting for the Xbox sales to dry out until releasing on other platforms to encourage people to buy an Xbox. I really don't know what the americans are like, so i really don't know the answer...

that could well be the reason why the Xbox does so well with measly parts, like 700 mhz processor and geforce 3, and the others.

that reminds me, i was playing GTA3 on PS2 today, and now i know why they say it is so much better on pc. it is. a lot.
i couldn't bear the loading times and frame jumping, and lo-detail models and effects of which i suffered none on PC, but was present on the console. if i had to choose between the two, i pick PC.
and about sitting at a desk is uncomfortable? i prefer being in my low-to-the-ground-laid-back chair than the corner of a wooden table, or a sofa about 3 metres from the screen.

in a way, choosing the PC over a console signifies higher sophistication in yourself. i might even earn a little more respect sometimes in doing so.

The problem isn't with developers releasing half finished games, the problem is the platform they are designed for. Consoles are easy, every single one has the same hardware and the same technology, but with PC games developers have to take into consideration the fact that no one PC is the same.

Making a game able to run perfectly on every PC on the market is impossible, so it's natural many will have problems. I have Raven Shield, I have installed no patched and it runs fine for me, other people I know who have ATI cards also experience no problems while others do. This is the problem with PC games, it's not solely down to developers but more the gaming system they develop for.

That's partly due to the fault of the publisher, who constantly puts pressure on the developer to finish the game, even if it is a load of balls near release date.

Halo 2, I'll bet money,

Oh, that could be do with the OS. See, Xbox was designed for games only (despite what hackers are doing with it), so the OS for Xbox is minimal, reducing the chances of crashing or whatever. Windows XP has several things going on at a time when you play a game on it. Just press Ctrl Alt Delete and see what processes are being used, despite the fact you're only using Word or whatever.

No fear, Skies is yours as soon as I receive your payment !

It just annoys me that some developers think it's okay to release games which so badly need more work on them. Halo 2, I'll bet money, will be as bulletproof as Halo was, and I'm guessing the PC version will be nowhere near as steady.
