Or "Bi-Centennial Man" or "DARRYL" or "Pinnochio".
Kubrick spent 10 years stroking his beard and "er...umm.." about this movie, he dies and Spielberg says "He liked me, therefore I should make it for him".
And promptly throws any of Kubrick's noted coldness and hardness out the window and blows his sugary-load over the script.
"His love is real, but he is not"
Oh please, do you really think Kubrick would approve of that?
And Jude Law as Gigolo Joe, a "sex-Mech". Basically a walking vibrator that looks like a big gay Kraftwerk robot.
Utter pants in my humble opinion.
Sugary, cloying, a pointless 30 min narration-type thing to explain the previous 90mins in case you fell into a sugar-induced coma.
Godawful.
Just like Eyes Wide Shut was.
Just couldn't believe that people were trying to defend the man without mentioning his best film
What's his best film then? I would say Jaws and I mentioned that in my post earlier.
A.I. - like Goatboy said, it had potential and does end up with one or two good moments. However, Spielberg did ruin a film with a promising begining. Spielberg's most obvious trait as a director also lessens the two films he won Oscars for - now when you're picking the year's best director should you really choose the film that the director has managed to cheapen? Opps, sorry, Oscars rarely go to the best/most tallanted individual/film.
I think you and I have similar views on movies.
A.I, had the potential to be something good, but once more Spielberg whips out the God-Lights and sugary nasty for us all.
Voice-over was redundant, "Hello, I'd like to walk you through the previous 2hrs in case you were asleep or sat there thinking 'Kubrick? This was Kubrick's movie?'"
Speilberg used to make movies about people trying to buck the odds, to over-come "The Man" to create something better.
(Close Encounters/Sugarland Express/ET/Jaws etc), but has since relaxed into the middle-aged concern of "The Family" and other such noble pursuits.
On the commentary to Close Encounters, Spielberg says that he couldn't make that film now.
No way could he sympathise with the Roy Neary character that surrenders his family in pursuit of his personal obsessions.
So instead of lone characters battling the odds to triumph, you have a nice-middle class character protecting all that he has worked for.
And you are trying to defend Spielberg the post should consist of Jaws... then he went off the rails and decided everything would have to have a sugary ending. Even if it was a film about the Hollocaust.
Saving Private Ryan is his best work but all the rest are average or even amateur :(
I might watch the Fast and The Fury instead, then. Or a Knights Tail.
