The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
Perhaps this is because of the amount of times we have actually discussed these things... perhaps it's due to the amount of people with simular opinions, no real unbiased objections to anything.
Perhaps it's to do with arguements that seem pointless, because no one is going to agree, because everyone is so stubborn.
Or perhaps it's to do with the society of the forums, and the way our family has expanded and changed.
No doubt, the next person who will read this after me will be someone who has not been around here as much as some of us. This isn't a bad thing that more people are coming into the forums, but it is a bad thing that we see less and less of the older foggers.
And because of this, because we're getting bored with the same argument over and over, it's time for a change.
Can a perfect society exist? Where race, sex, opinion or view makes no difference to the amount of respect a person is given? Only equality can lead to a perfect society, and these forums are certainly not equal.
Turn your head. A notable wrote this topic. This is because he has been voted to be above and beyond all other posters. If a society was composed entirely of notables, then perhaps it would work. But not like this. I doubt even all the notable will ever read this.
You are a just arrived today. In a few weeks, if you write 300 posts and include 10,000 words or so, you will become an apparent regular. The content of your posts is ignored. Perhaps this is right, but then, perhaps your status should be ignored entirely. Experience is a must, yes... but perhaps that should be learnt through time, not through pre-written rules. I'm also not saying that we should all be encouraging newbies, I think they should go through all they need to be able to write their opinions clearly and wisely. The Fog Prime also has improved... but only because less people are posting. People who have been here a while no longer post so many topics.
Staff? Of course they should be put above us. They run this site, and our respect is demanded, and rightfully so. That's the only real good that has come from this.
So what am I really saying? Abolish notables? Abolish the regular system altogether and go back to being on the same level?
I know we all see people differently, without the newbie/regular/notable status anyway... it's only the people I enjoy the company of, not the whole race of regulars.
So perhaps I am saying that. Perhaps the direction we should take is not forwards, but backwards. Back tracking to where it all went wrong. A new start, perhaps?
This of course is just my opinion, and I see no more of it. All I want now is yours.
As for the ranking system, I wasnt here before it was introduced but from what Ive read it has caused a lot more grief than glory - disgruntled newbies complaining that they are not taken seriously and so on.
I dont know.
So a summarised form of my points/questions
~More traffic means people have to be selective in what they read.
~I don't like the idea of posting stuff that might get ignored.
~Why doesn't anybody use the retro forum for retro discussions?
There was more, but I forget what... so it probably wasn't important....
The system of notable/newbie puts nobody up/down in my eyes.

No, a pefect societ cannot exist, neither can a classless society either.
If we got rid of the newbie/regular/notable system, what would happen? What does the system do? It merely puts values on things we already know anyway. The notables were voted in because they were respected in the forums, if you get rid of the title, they will still be respected.
People will still only read their stuff, as there is now far too many new topics to read all of them, so people read ones by names they recognise.
If a newbie comes along, no one recognises him, so no one will read his stuff, the same as it is at the moment.

Yeah it says Notable Hunter (its a fun thing you know) and oh wait your a Notable, KILL.
Sure its nice but against most of the morals I have.

Why do I like it?? It's a nice bit of recognition for being here so long and for hopefully bringing a lot of good stuff into the FOG Forums.
It also makes everyone in the WWF Forum listen to me. ;D Apart from Bonus of course, grrrrr....;)
Anyway, you can call it selfish if you want, but I don't think I'm being selfish, I just like being a Notable.
I'm not sure where the forums go from here...I sort of agree with what Stryke said about not having Newbies and regulars, but then people like YH and RBS perhaps wouldn't get the respect they deserve, and there'd still be a lot of arguing over the Notables or whatever...
Ah well, it's up to Snuggly and Tony I guess.
